I found this not to long ago I just forgot about it until today. I was walking the creek in a town that was settled in 1790 and found it in the bank. I believe it's early 19th c but I don't know jack about inkwells. On each side it has a different word it says Josiah Johnson's Japan writing fluid London. It looks like its made of stoneware and a salt glaze. I have looked it up and found a picture of on of a different color but no info about it. I love it I just wish I could find some info about it. Thanks for looking

What a cool find ! I've never seen anything like it. Nice work.

That is some inkwell. Never seen one that shape but the hole looks handy for holding the pen when not in use. :occasion14:

It's neat & it's different!

WOW thats OLD!! NICE FIND!! i love finding inkwells!!

Hey recon,

Fabulous stoneware teakettle ink, sir! I would think first half of the 19th Century, date wise. How would you describe the color, and is there a potter's mark anywhere?

I'm busy finding no historic information on Josiah, though there is a Johnson genealogy site that's temporarily closed for remodeling.

I love it. Did'ya see this one: tea.jpg inkwells page

Thanks I also love it! I did see that one it was the only example I could find but no info about it. The color is a reddish brown. There is no stamps or writing but there is a finger print from the potter on the top of it and is my favorite part of the ink I think it's awesome to have a 150+ year old finger print really adds a personal touch to it.

Great looking ink for sure, never seen anything like it before. Great recovery for sure and it'll look great on display regardless of what's around it.
