John ..What you are saying is that as soon as i get a sound with the Infinium don't try to pin point any more just stop and dig that spot?? ......................==Jim==

Until Jim gets back to answer your question I'll jump in with what little I know.

With the stock 14x10 DD coil you have a little "bullseye" painted right on the coil. This is for deeper targets.

Targets on the surface or very shallow pinpoint just like your Sovereign GT (at the top or heel of the coil).

Personally I'm no fan of the DD coil so I ordered an 8-inch mono coil for my Infinium. This coil should always pinpoint dead-center with no goofing around. I'm thinking the 8-inch should even work in trashy areas once the machine signals are learned.

The thing I want is depth. I'm tired of VLF's hunting down 3-4 inches when we think we're getting down 10. The few very old coins, relics, and jewelry pieces left at the heavily worked sites are either very deep or masked by trash. The days of the super powerful discriminators are gone if one wants those really old great finds in "hunted out" locations.

Michigan Badger,

Congrats on you getting your new Infi. Let's all hope for an early spring! Joe

That's correct. If you advance your coil further it will pick up the other coins too, and is difficult, sometimes impossible to pinpoint the coins individually. So, you kind of like have to attack from the outside, and remove each coin individually from the outside. When you are down to your last coin, then it is easy. Some coinspills have over 20 coins in them with the coins all lying at different agles. All the rerturning frequencies to the coil are all mixed up. And add to this the power that the Infinium has, and you have a challenge for the electronics. But....take your time and you will get them all.

Question for John and Michigan Badger, with platinum do you get a high-low, or a low-high tone?

It will have to be John or somebody else to answer your question. No platinum here to test. But probably John would know this metal's response.

I'm trying to be patient and wait for spring. It's impossible to test metal detectors in pots of dirt. Got to get outside.

Man! I thought I was the only crazy one to go out in this kind of weather! :D

Badger: Very cool detector! Would love to know how it compares to standard VLF machines?

bavarianminister,

A VLF can't come close to the "DEPTH" of the Infinium! The Infinium used in the correct setting is just amazing (gets the small gold) and I know if I go over a target I'll hear it loud and clear! I use mine in the water and sometimes on the wet sand, but I usually like my VLFs running down the lane and dry sand. This detector has a learning curve and I wouldn't recommend it for beginners or as the "only" solo machine (makes a great hunting pair with a nice VLF water machine)! I don't use it all the time beach hunting as it's a PI and they will find more trash, BUT if an area has been pounded and worked out, it really can find the deep missed stuff!!! I also like it when areas are sanded in good and out in the deeper water! It has its place and if you take the time to read up on the posts with lots of practice, you'll be real glad it's part of your detector collection! I've also heard it's real nice nugget hunting and doing relic stuff too!!!

Thanks and HH!!! ;)

Excellent post!

I'm looking forward to using mine at small remote swimming holes. I also know of filled in areas where memorial cents in the 1980's are 8 inches deep. Many historical sites were/have been filled in from 1940's to present.

Hey Badger, Ain't she a beauty!? :D
I noticed your also at the infinium LS forum now. ;)

Yes she is. I don't get onto the Infinium forum much but figure that will change once I start hunting with it.

Yes when you use it there will be more need of help then when you're not using it.
