I found this item in a jewelry box of my mother's after she passed away a month ago and i really didn't think anything of it until i found all my dad's old coins and tokens. I posted on a coin website and they told me that it was a indian trade medal but i can't find anything like it. Please if anyone can tell me what it is and possibly how much it would be worth i would appreicate it.

A little history: Presenting Peace Medals actually began with the British, French and Spanish well before the US followed the tradition in 1801. They were used in diplomatic relations with the American Indians. They were 'gifts' awarded in connection with the signing of treaties and for 'services rendered'. Thomas Jefferson said of them: "These medals are considered as complimentary things, as marks of friendship to those who come to see us, or who do us good offices, conciliatory of their good will towards us, and not designed to produce a contrary disposition towards others."

The custom got out of hand when the medals became mass produced; consequently, their 'value' and significance waned quickly. This medallion, issued before the US Indian Peace medals, IMHO should command a hefty premium due to its historic value and rarity.
Don....

thank you so much Don, if I wanted to sell this item how would i go about doing so?

thank you for giving me this link - i've been searching everywhere for information on this.

My first thought would be to send high resolution photos of this medallion to the American Numismatic Society with permission they may use your images in consideration of their mentioning your name in the credits. Yours would be their best image.
At that point you could also ask them for a suggestion as to how to sell the medallion. You might also offer to donate yours to their museum—and take the tax write off.
Aside from that, I’d want to know what other identical medals have sold for and through what media: Online auctions, fixed price offerings or (??).
Learn what you can about this medal and Indian Peace Medals before you consider selling. As an example, check out this site: Indian Peace Medals: Genuine, fake, fantasy items described and defined.. You may then wish to contact Mr. Hartzog, tell him what you have and ask for his opinion. Many others specialize in Indian Peace medals and they can be found online. indian peace medals for sale - Google Search
Do the research first, then you'll be an informed owner; and at that point you may decide not to sell.
Good luck,
Don…….
