I was given this about a year ago by an old rockhound he said it was a spear shaping tool used to easily remove branches from the shaft it fits comfortably in my hand and the inside bore is smooth the stone appears to be a conglomerate with the host rock at about a 6-6.5 but I think its an old type brick that has been broken and weathered possible find location near yucaipa California

Rich - I don't know what that is. It's a cool rock I would have taken home with me. As usual, knowing the context of the find is critical. If it was found in association with other artifacts it's a lot different that if it's a random find. Sorry I can't provide anything useful. My opinion on it being a shaft scraper is that I don't think it is one. I don't think it would function well in that service relative to a more typical shaft scraper.

Thanks,
Joe

Well if it 'fits comfortably (or perfectly) in the hand' that pretty much assures it's an artifact. Sorry, nothing on you, but the more you learn about artifacts the more that phrase will grate on you. I'm with twitch. It could have been used for something, but we would have to know the context in which it was found. I suppose it could be used for a shaft abrader but there would be wear marks to indicate that. Still a cool rock that would have caught my eye.

I have to agree... I find a lot of items like that here in florida. that conglomerate rock takes surprisingly little time to form. it could have formed around something that has sinse rotted away. or it might be a piece of what we call tube rock. that's where an ancient burrowing creature made a tunnel and the ground has sinse solidified around it.(Gastropod)

thanks for all the feedback after posting i became more currious about it i went back to the friend whom i got it from it was found in a place called wildwood canyon in yucaipa california a well known indian location he didnt find anything else in that spot but other near by locations some items were found more recently a large tribal grind stone was found in the same area he is very old and cant get out to the area to show me but he gave me a very good idea where to look using google maps so as soon as the weather cools down a bit i plan on looking in some of the suspect areas

Good for you! Looks like it is the start of your collection either Way.

Found this in the same area as I was directed to it was mostly buried but I could see what it was as soon as I saw it very happy it's getting donated to a local museum
