Seldom does a total skunk hunt -- nary even a button found -- merit a report in here but I had to share this chuckler with fellow detectorists.

I'm sure many folks are like me and get highly focused when swinging a detector. Truth be told, I get downright zoned out, almost impervious to surroundings beyond my swing zone. Such was the case today, as I worked a section of NJ Pine Barrens. Being fully frustrated by no-hit hunting, I went into a slow and intense mode, one that often works when I have to get off the snide.

Well, I didn’t even have time to get off said snide before I got a jolt. As I was swinging, head down, I suddenly came upon a ground-level face staring up at me. I have to admit it was a bit of a freak-out, as the foliage in front of me took on a face.

With my “finds” camera at the ready, I was able to capture the moment as it unfolded.

I like that, a bit of nature is always a nice surprise.
about 6 years ago I was just out in the woods, and I saw a cougar. Thankfully it didn't want me for dinner, and it just walked up and checked me and my friend out from about 50 feet away. I was a bit scared, but it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life. A moment I will never forget.

Great camera work !! A precios moment ! Thanks for posting ! MaineRelic

:laughing7: I wonder if it's Mama whupped it's butt for leaving the spot where she "parked" him.

My dad and I were detecting in the woods in PA today when we got to the top of a hill where a huge hollowed out tree stump stood. I looked inside and saw a baby deer very similar to your find sleeping inside. We both got to see the creature get up and run off. It came back later as we were leaving. I didn't intend to ruin it's nap.

The exact same thing happened to me. I would have tripped over it if I didn't see it. I too have the pictures to prove it. But I didn't have my camera with me , I ran home (10 minute drive) and came back and it was still laying there. It never moved the whole time I was hunting. As long as you don't touch it you won't imprint it. Pretty awsome.

Not to worry. The little guy ran maybe 15 yards away and stopped. I departed. On my return swing, I saw he had parked at the exact same clump of vegetation. Instinct at its finest.

I remember almost stepping on one of these years ago .I was fishing in early spring, I was walking along a stream and in fulldress waders .As I was going over a log my foot cumming down on this poor little guy . I still do not Know How I never stepped on it , Any way ended up I some how did a dive-rool over it and managed not to break my neck . as I picked myself up. it just looked at me as if to say "It doesn't take all that."I was about 230 lbs little did it know how close I was to killing it .

Great pic, good eye to spot that little guy!!

That is priceless. Thanks for sharing. I'd vote banner on this one. :hello2:

BTW, it is a mini-buck. As kuger pointed out, the Antler bases are evident. Those dimples on the head!
