All Treasure Hunting
On Friday I brought my son to daycare try-outs. Detecting was not even and option as I thought I was supposed to stay there with him... but they gave daddy the boot for a couple hrs to see if baby could hang. So I did what any self respecting detector fanatic would do and skipped lunch and the bathroom to hit a local park. Wouldn't you know it the porta pottys had locks on them! What was an hour and a half of discomfort when there might be something there? This park is one of the trashiest parks I know but the trash hides some good stuff! The first hole I got a penny signal that turned out to be a sweet 1917 merc! My day was made at that point! Less than a foot away I got another signal that was deeper and also a penny. Could it be another silver? It turned out to be a really nice 1890 seated liberty dime! These are not common for me so I was stoked! To add the icing on the cake I realized that I didn't scratch it! Last year I found my first seated dime and put a nice scratch on the face of it with my shovel. It was pretty much the best looking dime you could hope to get out of the ground and I knew I'd probably never have a chance to find one as nice. It hurt my feelings every time I looked at it! Little did I know I'd find one that was just as good and the exact same date. The thing that's crazy is that I've never found any silver as pristine as these two seated dimes! I went on to find a silver earing, 2 wheats and some trash. The boy aced daycare too! It was an excellent day to find those silvers and see his smile when I picked the tyke up!

Saturday I detected for hours in an old park over the river and through the woods. I found 2 Wheaties it was an awful hunt but I was with my buddies.

Sunday I did the up at 5:00am and hit the park routine with my buddy the silver bandit. We started at 6:00am. The sun was just starting to come up. Nothing like seizing the day! A recap on this park: It's boring. There is nothing there. The ground is like cement from being baked all summer. You have to almost chisel the coins out. There is a high coin scratch factor. I had high hopes of finding a barber dime and I really wanted one. The bandit found a barber dime fairly early on. Now I had to find one! In a short time I found a my first silver: a 46 Washington. Alright a great start! Next I found an 1898 IHP. What a joy to dig! The next one was a shock because I've never found one of these at a city park... though I have seen it done it's a rarity. It was a large copper! These coins are awesome because there is such a huge variety out there. I wailed it with my shovel but it had so much corrosion I may have improved it! After chiseling with some Andre's pencils I do believe I have a Coronet large cent 1816-1839. I think it's one of the later versions of the bust... not the matron. This could be crazy talk but someone who was around during the Revolutionary war could have used this coin! I think this coin could benefit from some electrolysis. Now I have to figure that process out. Next hole less than 1 foot away I popped out a silver rosie! I was sure it was going to be a barber dime but I'll take a rosie… As far as I can tell quarters are usually an 86 on the Max. That could be a silver but it's a toss up. An 87/88 is more likely to be a silver quarter. That's the next signal I got and it was deep... probably 8 inches in this uncooperative dirt. Things were looking good! I carefully pried out the dirt with my hand shovel and dug my second ever Barber quarter! It was in way better condition than the only other BQ I've found...which is almost smooth. An 1893! Very happy with it. It's a little beat up but that's ok with me! It was an excellent day of hunting for both of us. The bandit went home with 5 silvers which is apparently his "quota" Haha! I like to set the bar a little lower so I don't get too disappointed. The treasure gods were so kind to me this weekend. I will forever be digging to pay tribute to their generosity. :headbang: Thanks for reading!

Were ya late picking him up lol. Great day for you hope your little treasure liked his new play mates

Right on time Tommy! But today I forgot to bring his milk. Had to fight city traffic home and back. Mom would have killed me!

Yea, thanks for taking us along and congratulations on some great keepers.

Thank you! Telling the story... helps to relive the moments!

That Barber quarter would sure make my day. Nice finds all round. Great post...love the humor. HH.

I think it made my month!!! Thanks I like to try to make my obsession seem less serious by joking.

WTG and keep 'em coming! BTAW, is that a V nickel in the second photo?

Not sure which coin you mean. The middle coin is a Barber quarter. The crusty one is a large cent.

All hail the Treasure Gods! Those are some very nice coins. Congrats!

Yep! A nice handful of keepers for sure. Likin the big Barber Silver. Wtg!

Thank you! The back of it has no markings. I say it's silver because it looks like the right color to me and I think it rang up in that range. I would love to say it's a trade item but that's probably stretching it! It's an old park but I don't think it's that old!

You live in one of the original 13 US Colonies, I think there's a pretty good chance it maybe trade silver. :icon_scratch:
The shape, colour, the way it's been cut and the wear are all indications, at least to me, that this piece may have some age to it.

Can you post a pick of the back of the piece?
Dave

Hi Dave I'll try to remember to get a photo of the back. I didn't think earrings like this existed back then. It's a wire post soldered on that probably had a backing clasp that is gone. Do you have any photos of trade silver earrings?

Nice finds. Your put in the effort, and the Treasure Gods rewarded you. It doesn't always work out like that :laughing7:

Nice story and very nice finds! :icon_thumleft:

Great finds. Man, the second I read that you just popped over to the park and found a Seated dime I immediately thought "he must be in either MA or CT". Sure enough. I've been actively hunting for seated coins in the Seattle area for a long time now and haven't got one. I suppose I'll probably stumble on one when I least expect it. Congrats again!
