On Friday I brought my son to daycare try-outs. Detecting was not even and option as I thought I was supposed to stay there with him... but they gave daddy the boot for a couple hrs to see if baby could hang. So I did what any self respecting detector fanatic would do and skipped lunch and the bathroom to hit a local park. Wouldn't you know it the porta pottys had locks on them! What was an hour and a half of discomfort when there might be something there? This park is one of the trashiest parks I know but the trash hides some good stuff! The first hole I got a penny signal that turned out to be a sweet 1917 merc! My day was made at that point! Less than a foot away I got another signal that was deeper and also a penny. Could it be another silver? It turned out to be a really nice 1890 seated liberty dime! These are not common for me so I was stoked! To add the icing on the cake I realized that I didn't scratch it! Last year I found my first seated dime and put a nice scratch on the face of it with my shovel. It was pretty much the best looking dime you could hope to get out of the ground and I knew I'd probably never have a chance to find one as nice. It hurt my feelings every time I looked at it! Little did I know I'd find one that was just as good and the exact same date. The thing that's crazy is that I've never found any silver as pristine as these two seated dimes! I went on to find a silver earing, 2 wheats and some trash. The boy aced daycare too! It was an excellent day to find those silvers and see his smile when I picked the tyke up!
Saturday I detected for hours in an old park over the river and through the woods. I found 2 Wheaties it was an awful hunt but I was with my buddies.
Sunday I did the up at 5:00am and hit the park routine with my buddy the silver bandit. We started at 6:00am. The sun was just starting to come up. Nothing like seizing the day! A recap on this park: It's boring. There is nothing there. The ground is like cement from being baked all summer. You have to almost chisel the coins out. There is a high coin scratch factor. I had high hopes of finding a barber dime and I really wanted one. The bandit found a barber dime fairly early on. Now I had to find one! In a short time I found a my first silver: a 46 Washington. Alright a great start! Next I found an 1898 IHP. What a joy to dig! The next one was a shock because I've never found one of these at a city park... though I have seen it done it's a rarity. It was a large copper! These coins are awesome because there is such a huge variety out there. I wailed it with my shovel but it had so much corrosion I may have improved it! After chiseling with some Andre's pencils I do believe I have a Coronet large cent 1816-1839. I think it's one of the later versions of the bust... not the matron. This could be crazy talk but someone who was around during the Revolutionary war could have used this coin! I think this coin could benefit from some electrolysis. Now I have to figure that process out. Next hole less than 1 foot away I popped out a silver rosie! I was sure it was going to be a barber dime but I'll take a rosie… As far as I can tell quarters are usually an 86 on the Max. That could be a silver but it's a toss up. An 87/88 is more likely to be a silver quarter. That's the next signal I got and it was deep... probably 8 inches in this uncooperative dirt. Things were looking good! I carefully pried out the dirt with my hand shovel and dug my second ever Barber quarter! It was in way better condition than the only other BQ I've found...which is almost smooth. An 1893! Very happy with it. It's a little beat up but that's ok with me! It was an excellent day of hunting for both of us. The bandit went home with 5 silvers which is apparently his "quota" Haha! I like to set the bar a little lower so I don't get too disappointed. The treasure gods were so kind to me this weekend. I will forever be digging to pay tribute to their generosity. Thanks for reading!
