Often re-stamped so it could have even started its life earlier. Perhaps a trade item from the coast. Great find!
Sorry not the right person to ask. Although I have found about 5 of these, I have not studied them, as I focus on British coins only. They are pretty complicated, & the one I found the other day was hammered so many times it was nearly twice the size it started at, I could just see 1 counter-marked date on mine 1630, but had no idea when it was first minted.The Spanish under deSoto were in our state around 1541-1543. So, if this is 1653, it wasn't dropped by the explorers. Meaning, it's either a keepsake someone lost, or it was used for some kind of trade and lost along the way. But I wouldn't think copper would carry much trade value... it's interesting.
Crusader - if you are still monitoring, I'd be interested in your take on this... or any of you strong history folks.
