I'm a big fan of firearms... got a hefty collection myself, I reload, and go to the range often. I also use them for "critter control" at my parent's farm.
Just a couple of things to keep in mind:
-If you don't know firearms, or have never been around them, please take a safety course (for yourself and me as well

)
-If its going to sit in the gun safe (not the closet), spend your money somewhere else. You might as well get some use out of what you own.
-check your local laws on storage and discharging.
-Make sure you lock it up. Too many times kids (or even adults) get hurt or dead because they were playing with something they weren't supposed to. (30 years ago, my uncle, a police officer, came home to his apartment and found a 12 year old neighbor dead in his kitchen. the kid broke in and was playing with his service revolver - which he stored safely on top of the refrigerator)
-If you think the government is coming to get you and you're going to defend yourself with your new weapon... buy the detector... (they really aren't coming

-and finally... just use your common sense... what are you going to have more fun with
