I'm sorry sherm, I found my 3 little letters. V-D-and B

Hi Sherm,

So, A little bird told me that thse V's D's and B's can be really hard to see. Well, I had meant to take my magnifying glass to the coin, but I didn't see any sign of them, so I didn't worry about it. Well, after seeing an actual VDB coin, I realized just how small those little buggers are. I went back and got a little more dirt off the coin, then glassed it and sure enough, there they were. No, there isn't an S, but I actually DUG a VDB penny. I was pretty stoked when I found a 1909 penny, but I did the happy dance when I saw those little letters.

So, Sherm, you are forgiven for having a VDB penny, my envy has been sated, so now we can be friends again. I will even remove the land-mines from all your favorite MD spots.

Sorry the pic of the letters isn't better, hewlett packard is pretty much crap.

Pardon me for being ignorant but what do the letters mean ;D ;D

from what i understand they are the initials of the man who designed the coin.

Re: I'm sorry sherm, I found my 3 little letters. V-D-and B

Victor David Brenner made the famous bust of Lincoln with which we are all so familiar today. Lincoln was chosen as the subject for the new Cent since 1909 was the centennial of his birth. Until the appearance of Brenner's design, no person (living or dead) had ever appeared on a coin made for general circulation (however, this precedent had already been established on a few commemorative coins).

The earliest versions of the Lincoln Cent featured Brenner's initials (V.D.B.) near the bottom of the back of the coin. Apparently, such a prominent display was considered offensive, and the initials were removed later in 1909. In 1918, the initials re-appeared, this time hidden on the truncation of Lincoln's bust.

What pennies dates have the V.D.B. & why is an "S" significant?

Congrat's on the VDB Gold Fish.....To find an "S" is going to be the talk of the town, hope it happen's here so I can read it...Nice dig!!!!

Re: I'm sorry sherm, I found my 3 little letters. V-D-and B

Yeah, that "S" is about the peskiest letter of all. But a few good things have come out of this discovery, like 13 other wheats(including a 1917, 1916 S & a 1915 D), a merc, and my first silver nickel(1942 P). I have also discovered the beauty of searching old yards. A friend of mine bought a 100 yr old house, and all these coins, a good toy car, and a really cool button/pin thingy have come out of the back yard. I'm actually going to start asking about more yards now, I never really thought there could be so much good stuff in 'em. My thinking was that if only one family lived there, how much traffic could there be ?? Well, now I know.

HH all, I'm off to find that "S" !!!

Re: I'm sorry sherm, I found my 3 little letters. V-D-and B

gold fish, congratulations on the great find. Isn't it amazing what can be found in the soil? I mean, we walk/drive around and look at people's yards and under any one of them could be some other great coin just waiting to be liberated. This really is a fascinating hobby. Hope you find the 1909S VDB soon!!

The best way to learn about coins is to buy or borrow a copy of the 2007 edition of Whitman's RED BOOK. It will give you all the basic info necessary to begin learning what dates are "key" (important collector dates), the mintages of each coin, some significant error coins, general valuations, very basic grading considerations, etc.

VDB, as was mentioned in the post by loganscott, was originally placed on the first of the Lincoln Memorial Cents, but due to public outcry the initials were removed later that same year (1909) and weren't reinstated until several years later when the controversy had faded away. So some 1909 cents have the initials, but the majority for that year do not. The S mintmark is significant because fewer cents from the San Francisco Mint (S mintmark) were made, thus making them scarcer. So a somewhat scare 1909 cent with the initials plus the relative scarcity of the S mintmart make the 1909s cent more collectable than the other 1909 cents.
