i'm not sure ? i need your help on this one

this was dug up at a 1850's house in the back yard where the garden was located
it's 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/4" high it does not stick to a magnet an it's heavy for it's size
the pins are 3/8th" apart and they are 3/8th" long and their almost 1 1/2 mm wide
i'm thinking it was a horse(maybe female) decoration on a leather strap ? ? other than
that i'm stumped i have dug a few stick pins and i measured one pin 1/4"long and
1mm wide anyone ever dig one of these ? anyone know what they were used for ?

i added a stick pin for comparison

thanks jeff thats 2 ideas i did'nt think of i'm pretty sure a man would'nt have worn it (flowers) ?
and like i said it's got some weight to it for a ladies collar or a ladies hat
i am only aware of one way to fasten a stick pin here is an example

IMG_5339_2.jpg

IMG_5340_2.jpg
the pins on the what's it are 3/8" apart the example photos there is not enough room for
both fasteners unless they had a double fastener in the early days that i'm not aware of ?
i picked up a scale at Harbor Freight today just for this reason relic id's
it came out at 250 grains and 1.16 oz i hope thats right when i opened it i dropped it on the
table ??? then i read the directions it said DO NOT DROP IT :-[

anyone want to confirm what jeff said ? when i show this to the owner of the property
i'd like to say to him this was definitely used for.........? with a smile :)

Ok I'll bite.. I think its a Garden Marker.
I think since it was found in the back yard by the garden this would be a likely choice.
The object is most likely lead, and the pins in the back were probably at one point in time fastened to a wood marker.
just a hunch

Maybe a garden marker - definitely not something to put on a harness, that I can think of (stab the animal).

There are much smaller clutches for pins - like the ones that you put on earrings.

Of course, there are building decorations - where you just tap ceramic decorations right into a wall.

Neat item.

That interesting little item is constructed as such that if it was nailed to a vertical surface, you could the suspend something from it.
Hmmmmmmm :icon_scratch:

It's decorative, maybe you press it in and hang a 'Bless This Home' or, 'Home is Where The Heart Is' needlepoint work.

thanks for taking a bite detector de metales :) i thought brass or copper i'm pretty sure your
"right on" it being lead probably lead based paint too there is a house - what was a large garden -
and a small barn at the back of the property someone probably bought this and it was attached
to wood for the garden or even the barn [ like mrs. oroblanco suggested ] the barn was taken
was taken down in the 70's the owners been there since the 50's so he might even remember it ?
every thing you said makes sense to me

I'm voting for the brooch or lapel pin.

I dug a heavy gold brooch some years back, and large also. It was fastened by a pin that was attached.

I doubt that a lead object that is painted would be nailed to anything. You'd chip the paint and bend the soft metal.

Yep definately if it is, it's a Large Womans Pin

The pins should be straight & I doubt it would be hammered on.

So i will stick to my guess since Large Women
Who used to act Classy used to wear large Hats
& Ugly (Sorry) Jewelry. (Maybe even from an easter Hat.)

Cool Find all the same.

Of course it could be from some Toy I guess or easter basket decoration

Alpine hat or lederhosen pin. I've seen some that measure 2" across.

thanks for the reply Al if this was gold, silver, or plated i'd say jewelry too i did rub the back part
and it's definitely " lead " and the pins are thick and long 3/8" at first i thought they were meant to be
bent like they were connected to leather ? and that rotted away it took a lot of force to bend them......for
the purpose they were used or after i like detector de metales idea i think it was bought applied to the
wood when it was made and it was meant for outside use but, most of you are saying it was jewelry
sooo, i gotta go with the majority
