I'm not Brave!

Does anyone else have a fear of asking someone if you can detect their yard? I'm talking a complete stranger here. Those that have, what responses have you heard?

I've never had any fear about it, but there have been times when it was awkward.

For me, about 1 in 12 will say NO. That's 11 YES's, and the ones that say NO are generally almost apologetic about it.

About 1 out of every 20 or so that say NO are rude about it, but still that's 200 plus YES's and just one smart elec.

Check it out: The worst thing they can do is say NO, and you don't get to detect there, right?

If you ask, you MAY (12 to 1 odds in my favor) get to search the spot. You will never know until you ask.

I look at it this way Jason: If there is someplace I want to search I will ask politely and honestly answer the owners/groundskeepers questions and see if I can get permission.

If they say YES (again 12 to 1 odds in my favor) I'm good to go!

If they say NO (1 in 12) then I scratch that spot off my list of places I want to detect. Keep in mind that places change hands and folks change their minds too.

Hope this helps. It helps me to remember the odds are in my favor, that's why I kept stressing them.

When you get permission it will feel so good and you'll wonder why it seemed so hard when you see just how easy it is!

Sounds good, man!

There are variables, like maybe 20 in a row will say YES or maybe 2 in a row will say NO, but the averages are very good and that's really what we're doing is playing the averages.

Just remember that it gets easier everytime you do it, and the more at ease you are, the more at ease the land owner will be!

I got a wife that knows no shame when it comes to asking permission. I'd say 95% of the time she gets a yes.

I asked one myself today, there is a old farm house about two miles out of town I've had my eye on. It's all boarded up but they keep the lawn mowed. Asked a neighbor today about the owner and he gave me the guys name. Called him and got permission, but he decided that since the land was leased I should talk to the leaser, got permission from him as well.

It's not so hard, most people know what metal detectors are and will tell you to go at it and have fun. Rick
