I'm new here.

Hello all, I'm new here. I actually came across treasure net on Instagram. Anyway, I have been collecting silver coins for about two years now. All US 90%. I also collect .999 FS. Recently I had been interested by metal detecting. My friend told me his dad had a spare one.. It was a beginner bounty hunter, traded 2 oz of silver for it. I used it on e and was automatically hooked (even though I only found old barber wire and a rusty railroad spike. I began researching more and recently purchased a Garrett ace 350 w/ the garret pinpointed. I only have used it three times. I am from New Jersey.. The ground is frozen now so I'll have to wait awhile till the ground thaws. I have been really excited to get back out there.. I have many spots in mind and I have permission to search my friends 12 acre farm.. House was built in 1732. My best find so far is a 1917 wheat penny... The oldest coin I've found. Really hoping to find some silver in 2014!! Maybe even some gold. Anyone have any advice for me? I still need to learn my ace 350, I am some what confused as to what it is signaling at some times. So that's my intro. Nice to meet you all. :)

Welcome. At the house site, it may take awhile to get down to the old stuff. Remove the newer trash and then you should find the old stuff. Try the Jersey beaches. They are probably not frozen. I'm not real far from you. It's frozen at my house and I'm going to the beach tomorrow.

Welcome aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: New Jersey for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.

I don't think that on really old sites one has "to get down to the old stuff". Most of my early coins at rev war era sites in lower N.Y. state were found five inches down or less. Unless an old site has been landscaped or had sod added there is no reason for old coins to be really deep. I don't believe they really sink much at all. If you have a virgin site just hunt and you will find old mixed with new. Welcome to the forum, and to learn your machine you must dig all targets until you understand what your machine is telling you. On that old site it would probably be best to dig all targets anyways, there are cool artifacts to be found that will read out as junk on most detectors.
