I'm Back...With My Best Coin Yet

Hello everyone! Long time!

As some of you know, I moved off Long Island last year, and headed upstate; I'm just outside of Lake George these days, and have been working hard to learn the new spots and do the research. After some minor wins last year (1-pound cannon ball, handful of musket balls) it's been really heating up for me lately, and yesterday I made my best coin find to date.

I was hunting some pretty dense woods that run along an old military road here that was used during the French & Indian War, close to several battle/ambush sites. I got one of those weird hunches to turn left instead of right, and about two feet after changing direction I hit a nice dime-type signal with my DFX. It was really shallow -- only about an inch and a half -- so I used my hands to brush away the dirt (didn't even bother digging), so you can imagine my surprise when a pristine 1724F 2 Reale "Cross Pistareen" popped up!

The detail on it is pretty fantastic. Although I'd like to think it was dropped during one of the battles there in 1755, I just don't know if it would've withstood 31 years of circulation and still be in the condition it's in today. But at any rate, it's now the oldest silver I've found (prior record holder was my 1738 1 Reale Pistareen) and is tied with my 1724 Charles II halfpenny as my oldest coin overall. Not a bad day of hunting!

Re: I'm Back...With My Best Coin Yet

Thanks again for all the congrats, everyone!

I went back to the spot today. No luck -- some iron and a hatchet blade that doesn't appear overly ancient. I DID find my glasses though, which I'd lost on Sunday. So now I can actually see my coin again!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Thank you sir. Great to be back!

Seriously -- I was all stoked a few weeks back over a lousy 1912 V nickel I'd found. It had been that kind of year so far. ;D

Grats!
That is one beautiful coin!

I was going to say I'd be back there and grid search all up that hill and around it, but I saw you posted you did go back.

Thanks, and I'll be back there again. Tough terrain to hunt. Gonna take some time to sweep it clean.

Brendan,

I don't think anyone doubts you at all, soil errosion, terrain, climate conditions, forest, desert, rainfall, leaf fall, animal and human are all big factors on the depth of a coin. Some of these coins can be many feet deep and we would pass right over them.

I just got back into metal detecting after a 17 year hiatus and picked up a White's EXT (I used to have a Spectrum). Can you tell me a little about your custom program? I haven't had any luck getting silver this year - lots of clad though. The irony is that I am picking up coins from the time I quit back in '93 or so to present! I am now doing research to find some great sites.

There is a lot of history up your way, and great opportunities to find something interesting. Congrats on your find!

Thanks for the congrats. But Kneo, did you mean you have an MXT? I'm not familiar with an EXT. Also I use a DFX...not sure if my program will work for you. But I find the key really, at least for me, is to crank the preamp gain as high as possible (I run mine at 4, unless it's really unstable in a given area) and to use as little discrimination as you can get away with. I tend to dig most signals, because the places I often hunt are pretty remote, and anything I find is usually old, even if it's old junk.
