I'm a noobie to the hobby, and need help.

I just picked up a metal detector from a flea market (garrett freedom 1) and works pretty well. My question is learning what the heck I found and how to clean them. Attached is a picture of an item I dug up like a huge nail but almost has a handle on it. I was thinking this could be an old tent stake or something along those lines.
