There are no sandy beaches(that I have seen) here in Arkansas so when I saw a clump of sand barely in the creek I picked it up and flipped it over and washed off a lot of loose sand. I've been wondering what it could be and why did so much sand collect around it? About half the sand washed off, the remaining sand is softer near the object and rock hard on the bottom (which was the top when I found it). My husband said it looks like a wrench or maybe a part off of an old horse drawn wagon. It has been noticed by every person that has enter my home, even the septic tank man. Any ideas?

Looks neat but I have no idea. Maybe someone else will know.

I'm not sure about the object but I find alot of metal objects and sandstone builds around them quickly. I've broken open sandstone I found with a metal detector and thought it must be old and found a pair of pliers.

Well if you think it is a wrench cause it looks like a wrench hit it with your metal detector or a magnet and determine is it is metal or just a conversation piece.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I saw weird sandstone type stuff on the north Suwannee. I know some people use that stuff to find points; I have no idea how, though. ???

I have also heard that rusty metal causes rock to form around them, just like you said.

I kept this piece I had to chip this nice flesher out of. It was much bigger. This was what was left when I did that final tap. It fits in it like a perfect little display.

Never thought about it, but I suppose old iron tools could bind to stone as mineral composite does. Not alloys but old wagon parts so on. I have some points that iron pyrite have bound to. Cool!

Cool save, thanks for sharing. Just out of curiosity, was that a treasure coast fl find, or north Florida?

This is a loose grain sandstone and I'm pretty sure its doing the binding. Here is a Spanish cutto knife I found with the same sandstone on it. and this 1 happens to have native American pottery stuck in it. look at the peace in the handle section. (Treasure coast)
