Looks about the right size to be an old RR locking pin for keeping cars together, but have never seen one that looks like that. Bet you had a fun time carrying it home! :laughing7:

I was thinking locking pin as well but all the pictures I've seen do not have the tapered top like this one does. and yes it was very heavy! Definitely did not fit in my digging pouch

You might try and find a train enthusiast forum and post with them, but if you do and find out what it is, post back what it is to increase our knowledge base.I think it is wheel based or linkage of some sort.

Do you know if there was a rail road tool shop nearby? To me it looks like a tool that fit in the turret of a vertical turret lathe.

No shop nearby. This was laying in the woods about 100 ft from the tracks. Just stumbled upon it and other railroad debris.

It looks like it has a slot for a lever or something to make it turn. The mystery continues.

Eh, I give up. I've never seen anything like it before.

It does, however, look like it "could" be some sort of specialized vise that would drop down into any older train car latch. Is the land level or was the piece found downhill from the tracks? It could also be a piece off of some unknown item that the train was carrying long, long ago. I just don't have any more guesses. :BangHead:

Haha! Don't rack your brain over it. Maybe one day them mystery will be solved. Thanks for taking an interest in it, though.
