Found this along the banks of the Cumberland river just above Nashville.
Any ideas? Not sure if you can tell but the back or left side nearest my wrist is rounded.
(sorry they're sideways...didnt have time to fix that)

Just a guess. A foot pedal for some sort of equipment, machine, instrument? The protrusion might be a 'stop' to keep the pedal from traveling too far.

The protrusion looks like it was designed for a thumb to rest against. My thought is a handle from a cooking wood stove door, the square end would latch under a notch, the hole was the pivot point.Look towards the metal and porcelain wood stoves.Or an old type Ice box.Same thoughts on the way it would lock the door.
