Creek find in N.E. Oklahoma that I believe to be worked flint.

I'd agree with it being a core... looks like it might have started out as a big quarry blank.

Thanks! I believe you guys are right about it being a core. After further inspection I see many shapes of possible tools that have been chipped out..

Fellas, I know it may seem like I've been doing this long enough not to have to ask this question! Here it is any way. At what point does a blank become a core? I've always thought of a core as a much smaller piece with obvious flaking all over. Like these.



How big would a blank be? Larger than this?



It has always been kind of a blurred line where blank becomes a core. For me any way.

NC... Core just describes a prepared piece of material after the rind (cortex) and exterior flaws have been removed to leave just a "core" of higher quality usable material.. Small pieces that look like they've been all used up are just what's left of a larger core until it was too small to be usable anymore and tossed.

Now I'm confused.
The pic on the left, would that not be what's left of a core? Where obvious flakes were removed to make tools?
The pic on the right, would that not be a quarry blank?
The piece Bstarrsun posted looks at best to be a hand held axe or chopping tool? By the looks of the ninth pic. But it's hard to tell by any of the pics.

JMO the one on the left is a core you can see where long flakes or blades were taken off and the one on the right is a preform / quarry spall.

Sorry Monster, the one on the right is 5 1/2" long! I should have noted that.

Yes it's five and a half inches long it makes it a nice preform/quarry spall.
You'd be amazed how big of a piece of material you have to start out with sometimes to get down to a nice finished blade... Now imagine while at the quarry you prepared a nice spall for transporting back to the village ...at some point at the village you needed a piece of material for making some hand tools after killing a deer ...the first thing you grabbed happen to be that particular piece..
... from that point forward it turned into a core to remove pieces from... that's what I meant by it looks like yours started its life as a quarry blank... I don't think it ended its life as one.
These people were surviving out there they weren't following manuals even though they were quite good at what they did not everything went according to plan always
