I noticed that too grisley, but couldnt make it out.I think it will turn out to be either a WW1 German boot knife, 5.75" is about right for the blade length.Maybe even the franco prussian war 1870 -71.I know i have seen that blade shape some place but i forget where.

Here's a negative and enlargement of the area. I noticed those markings too. Can't really tell if they're hammer marks or actual numbers/letters. My guess is that the blade's old enough, they're probably tool or casting marks that came out over time. Beautiful knife though!

I only see 5 appendages on what looks like a gauntlet glove. looking at your avatar I think your the guy to say yay or nay on this knife. Mike

I would think that if this knife was "issued" there would be some kind of markings to that effect . We carried knives of our own when jumping but they were not issued and were used to cut ourselves out of the lines if we landed in a tree . A close look seems to show an uneven blade at the hilt . More handmade than craftsman produced . Still it is something to have .

It could be a hand made job a guy sitting in a trench filing a piece of strap steel, spring steel into a blade.Any idea what the black part of the handle is made out of?

OK, my MD broke a few years ago but getting another at Christmas and came back to this sight just for fun and looked at old threads. I noticed something I haven't seen or forgot about...look at the cross. there is a diamond shape within the cross comprised of 4 smaller diamonds.

It's a pretty odd knife. The handle would not be very comfortable to grip although someone went to a lot of trouble to make it. The blade on the other hand is a very poorly made blade, it has no nice grind lines and looks fairly thin and flimsy. Could just be a letter opener with a wide blade. Being as the blade is the main function of a knife and this blade looks poorly made and the handle looks uncomfortable to hold I do not believe it was made for hard work or heavy usage such as a trench or military use knife. It is entirely possible that it originates in the far east such as India, or Africa, both known for knives with poor quality blades and ornate handles. It does have that tourist grade knife look to me.

Found at Garage sale - Any idea please.

The inlay/Marquettery in the handle reminds me very much of the inlay/Marquettery in a wooden carry case of some WW2 era Japanese chopsticks I have. I'll try and post a pic in a little while. It makes me think this knife/Dagger may have Asian origins...but that's just a guess obviously.
