Metal Detecting
I got played today like a six string guitar. Last night a fellow responded to my Craigslist ad about materials for gold panning. We got to talking and I mentioned that I am a metal detectorist. He chimed in and states that he detects as well, and insists that we meet up today and go to his "honey hole" of which he claimed he had dug 10,000 civil war bullets, six US plates, 60 buttons, and hotchkiss fragments. He went on and on about how many Williams cleaners and 3 ringers he had dug. He fooled me. He knows A LOT about history, and has done some serious research on different relics. He seemed intelligent on relic hunting. I agreed to go without hesitation. He suggested we go in the morning(this morning) and I agreed. I arrived at the guys house at 9am, introduced ourselves, and we got in his truck and headed down the road about an hour. We pull up to the site and I am just envisioning myself digging 200 bullets(as he GAURANTEED ME!)! After 8 hours of nonstop detecting with no lunch break, I have dug a few modern bullets, most of which he insist are civil war "drops", even though they had rifling. All of the dug bullets came from one 100'x100' area and NOWHERE else. We were digging someone's Target practice range! He continued to tell me how many different types of bullets he had dug that we were mysteriously not digging. That, accompanied with other constant signs, showed me that this guy was a habitual liar. I even tried to call him out when he tried to tell me most copper jacketed bullets were from the civil war. Upon my arrival at my house, I looked up the battle map, and where this fellow took me was NOWHERE near the battlefield. Needless to say I felt kidnapped today. I learned so many lessons from this. Let this be a warning to everyone. Why this man felt the urge to blatantly LIE to my face I have not the slightest clue. I know lots about the civil war and this man flat out insulted me and my opinions. I could go on and on. I hope I never see his face again. He wanted to know when we were going detecting again and I told him I would call him. Hopefully he will get the picture.

Below are my as he called it "Civil War" bullets. One actually does look like a 3 ringer, but it is 54 caliber muzzeloader slug. The roundballs are from someone's muzzeloader practice. They are 45's.

What a wasted day.

The trip only cost me the drive from my house to his. I had planned on giving him guas money for the drive to and from the site but when I figured out he was lying I decided to not pay him a cent. While we were detecting he gave me a brand new 9 volt battery for my pinpointer which i kept, and on the way home we stopped at a store, he went in and brought me out a drink. I offered to reimburse him but he denied. So as you can see the trip basically did not cost me anything, I just lost a day of detecting on a day with such beautiful weather.

a good day out, & you learned not everyone is all there :laughing7:

works for me :occasion14:

like Tom massey would say
"colorfull people"

Sounds like a day with very few good finds. But I wouldn't go as far as being scammed. You are only out a few bucks in gas. No finds are ever guaranteed. There have been plenty of days where promising spots haven't proven fruitful but you. There will be plenty of other nice detecting days to come. Just not with that guy :)

Well, I guess it was better scammed than taken out to a field and he killed you or something. lol Look at the positive! That really does suck though...no clue in the world why he would do something like that.

Ahhhh!!!!!! I bet it was Rick Savage the last show I seen from American Digger they had a WW1 compass they were saying was worth $500 and I know that's bull cause I was given one years back by an oldtimer and have recently done research on the net about it and you'd be lucky to get $100 by the looks of it.

Over the past couple of years, I have invited some folks I didn't know, but met through TNET, to my place to hunt. All were great experiences, and think everyone was really decent. Maybe they didn't have great finds on the property but I believe they all enjoyed themselves and I try to be a good host. Guess I was just lucky?

Foundin_, remember one more thing.

if "the end of the world as we Know it" believers are correct
Lead is the new Gold.

maybe This guy took you to a gold Mine :laughing7:

I understand feeling like you were taken...but from what you've posted so far there are only a couple of options...

1) The man is so lonely that he will do anything to find a friend.
2) The man is as dumb as a box of rocks and can't read a map...and actually believes he took you someplace he didn't.
3) The man is an arrogant lying jerk who...for some undetermined reason planned to waste your day, then give you a battery, then buy you a soda on the way home and then ask you when you guys could get together again.

Or a combination of all of the above.
If he is just a baldfaced liar, then he deserves to be lonely.
If he is anything else....I think he deserves our pity.
What a miserable existence.

It is easier to find a good wife than a good detecting partner, LOL! HH, Mike

I find the opposite to be true. I have several good hunting partners. I consider them all good friends. Each of them have different ideas of what a good site should be. I have trouble with drama between us if I go out with one person and not another. It's not any kind of personal thing, Sometimes I'll get a call "You wanna hunt"? and I go. Then someone else is offended about not being invited. It's like spur of the moment and I'm available. Then there are places where you can't exactly bring four or five people in to. I don't mean to leave anyone out or hurt anyones feelings. If I get a spot I think is good and have permission lined up I like to try to include all my friends. I like meeting new friends and prefer to hunt with someone else as opposed to alone. I also don't like to waste peoples time driving all the way across town to hunt a place that turns out to be a dud. If I go to a place like that and it ends up producing then I get to hear about it. Or I drag someone 40 miles and the place ends up a dud then I feel bad about that. It seems like when I find something good someone will decide that I've been holding back on them. I think I'm like most detectorists. If I get a good spot I hunt the heck out of it until I think there's like next to nothing left. Especially if it's close to home or work. So I don't have any secrets. Other than certain farm fields which could possibly produce again after a good deep plowing. Alot of times I feel like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. I know some guys who prefer to hunt alone. I can understand why. No drama.

I know what you mean, but I can't say I have the drama, other then in my own Mind.
Personally My hunting partner numbers keeps Rising, but also Know I Can't take all at once.
the more there, the more chance of someone having a problem with us as a whole.
. whether Jealousy they don't have detectors, fear of groups within eye sight, or whatever.
so for the most part if someone wants to hunt, I let it up to them to let me know they are available.
in my mind, If I don't know in advance I Can't be faulted for them not being along.

Hunting partners are people who must be selected very carefully. There are phonies out there who just want to poach your sites. There are people in all hobbies who want attention and are willing to change their golf score, lie about the fish they caught, etc. just to get it.There are people who you may hunt with who actually bring things with them to "find". I feel sure there are people who buy relics/coins at flea markets, estate sales, Ebay, etc. and post them here just to get attention. Fortunately, you found out early before investing more time with that situation. HH, Quindy.

Craigslist massage girls have been abused, and much worse.

"SCAM" seems harsh.

Lemme get this straight. You trusted a complete stranger without doing any research of your own, did not find anything, and are now whining like a child because of your lack of common sense? I don't agree with the guy misrepresenting his site as something it wasn't, but jeez man, it is as much your fault as it is his.
