Metal Detecting
I got played today like a six string guitar. Last night a fellow responded to my Craigslist ad about materials for gold panning. We got to talking and I mentioned that I am a metal detectorist. He chimed in and states that he detects as well, and insists that we meet up today and go to his "honey hole" of which he claimed he had dug 10,000 civil war bullets, six US plates, 60 buttons, and hotchkiss fragments. He went on and on about how many Williams cleaners and 3 ringers he had dug. He fooled me. He knows A LOT about history, and has done some serious research on different relics. He seemed intelligent on relic hunting. I agreed to go without hesitation. He suggested we go in the morning(this morning) and I agreed. I arrived at the guys house at 9am, introduced ourselves, and we got in his truck and headed down the road about an hour. We pull up to the site and I am just envisioning myself digging 200 bullets(as he GAURANTEED ME!)! After 8 hours of nonstop detecting with no lunch break, I have dug a few modern bullets, most of which he insist are civil war "drops", even though they had rifling. All of the dug bullets came from one 100'x100' area and NOWHERE else. We were digging someone's Target practice range! He continued to tell me how many different types of bullets he had dug that we were mysteriously not digging. That, accompanied with other constant signs, showed me that this guy was a habitual liar. I even tried to call him out when he tried to tell me most copper jacketed bullets were from the civil war. Upon my arrival at my house, I looked up the battle map, and where this fellow took me was NOWHERE near the battlefield. Needless to say I felt kidnapped today. I learned so many lessons from this. Let this be a warning to everyone. Why this man felt the urge to blatantly LIE to my face I have not the slightest clue. I know lots about the civil war and this man flat out insulted me and my opinions. I could go on and on. I hope I never see his face again. He wanted to know when we were going detecting again and I told him I would call him. Hopefully he will get the picture.

Below are my as he called it "Civil War" bullets. One actually does look like a 3 ringer, but it is 54 caliber muzzeloader slug. The roundballs are from someone's muzzeloader practice. They are 45's.

What a wasted day.

yeah, lot of .38 Spl. Wadcutters and .45 ACP wadcutters. Maybe HE didn't know any better?

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, but like Diggit maybe he didn't know better, did you ask him how long he had been detecting or to see some of his finds, I know I can talk to some one for a few minutes and tell if they are full of poop when it comes to some things. Sorry about your wasted day but if I learn something I concerned it not a total loss. Good Hunting!!!!

You have to be careful with some of the people we have out here in the world today. Hate to hear that the trip was a bust.

That is the thing, I honestly believed him. He knew key terms only an experienced digger would know. He knew his facts. Something was very fishy. I bet he would have gotten over on most relic hunters on this forum. He was very slick. It leave me scratching my head wondering why.

That IS strange. Like you said, he knew what a 3 ringer and a Williams cleaner was, so he SHOULD have known better.
Maybe the guy just needed a friend BAD.

Sure he wasn't a member here?

He could have wanted friendship. Terrible way to get it. He said that he was not on any forums. I did ask. Here is another kicker. He claims to be in with the local museum. Claims that he gave all 10,000 of the bullets, all the plates, shells and buttons to the museum. I will be calling monday to verify that this guy is a fraud.

Well, by the thread title and the way the story started off I thought you got held at gunpoint and had your equipment stolen. That being said, things could have been much worse.

What was the scam? It just sounds like the guy was an idiot that didn't know any better.

Booom Babys-AMERICAN-DIGGER-PROHIBITION-CASH-120411-large.jpg .... is this the guy your talking about

...by chance do wear tight jeans...lol

Maybe he wanted a date! :love4:

There is no way I would get in a car with a stranger. I dont even like getting in my car with myself. One time one of my other personalitities kicked in while I was on the road and ended up punching myself in the face.:BangHead:

Sounds to me he's a Lonely "Friendly" Detectorist, who desperately wants a Hunting partner.
but unfortunately goes about it the wrong way.

Hey you got out hunting at a new site :dontknow:
Didn't find anything your proud of, but you could have.

Was this a real long trip out of the way ?
cost you an arm & a Leg ?

It is easier to find a good wife than a good detecting partner, LOL! HH, Mike

If he knows where your house is, I would be worried about protecting your property right now. If not, he was probably building a 'relationship' to gain your trust & 'night hawk' your researched sites.

The trip only cost me the drive from my house to his. I had planned on giving him guas money for the drive to and from the site but when I figured out he was lying I decided to not pay him a cent. While we were detecting he gave me a brand new 9 volt battery for my pinpointer which i kept, and on the way home we stopped at a store, he went in and brought me out a drink. I offered to reimburse him but he denied. So as you can see the trip basically did not cost me anything, I just lost a day of detecting on a day with such beautiful weather.

I would have called him out on his bullshit and then told him to tell his story walking.
