I "thought is was a sportsman button but it's not???

Any idea what this is?? I dug it yesterday with the other stuff and honestly the Rhode Island button took center stage.. it looked like the front of a sportsman button until I saw the little flanges on the side.. any ideas??

About the size of a 50 cent piece... the back is just a relief of the front.... hmm pinback makes sense.. but there are no solder backs on it.. ???

It may have had a cardboard insert, with pin attached at one point, lost to the elements.

Hard to say , anything on the back that would indicate rolled over edges that may have held an
insert?

I agree... looks like a heron. This was a popular motif on buttons and jewelry in the late Victorian era.

My guess is that it's a medallic ornament from some larger item. The tabs could have held it in place on fabric, leather, etc.
