I have a strong hunch of what this is, but not certain. Can anyone positively ID the brass piece in the 8 o'clock position on this photo? It is 2 3/4 inches long and 7/8 inch wide at its widest. The back has a square shaped nub about 1cm long coming out of it (which you can see the imprint of on the front), and it has not markings of any kind. The piece is cast brass.

Best Wishes,

I saw that screw/splotch looking thing, too. But I do not have a better picture, nor was I able to enlarge the image. However, when I zoom in on it at 400% it doesn't appear to have a slot in it and may just be a rusted spot or some kind of an anomaly. :dontknow: But I will say that upon closer inspection the spot does appear to be raised, as I can see a slight shadow on the right side of it. Also note that the spot is not dead center but rather is slightly off to one side.

I took another quick look around and am calling it quits with this final picture of what was described as an unidentified patch box "frame." The main reason it interest me is because it has a bar across the butt end, which might explain how our so called cover attached to a framework like this. (No hinge ~ but rather the attaching end just hooked over the bar). But with so many different types of muskets, rifles, guns to look at, its totally confusing. So that's why I'm bailing out and sincerely hope someone finds an exact match where I wasn't able to. I just wish I could have found at least one patch box cover that had those flange/wings on it. But I guess they either don't exist or just weren't meant for me to find.

Good luck! :icon_thumleft:

Patch box lid was what I thought, but it does look a bit funky. I will post some more photos tonight, and will double-check the dimensions posted. Also, a photo of the back will help (this was tossed up hastily from Kentucky, but now I am back home again).

Thank you so much for your help so far. I respect your input a lot.
