I think it's a Cob? 4? 8?

Hi today's find people,
Need some help! Normally I post on the beach and water forum, however I need a bit more input! Been doing some homework and found a new spot to hunt and it's starting to pay off! This morning found some old stuff but this was the big one!! Found in wet sand where many shipwrecks have been recorded! When I discovered it the coin was caked and I mean caked( wish i had take a before pic)!! I had no clue what it was and almost threw it out!! The green and black crust had me wondering what is this! Well I electrolysed it and this is what I found!! If it is a cob then cleaning it too much dose not matter cause this will be for me and my Trophy Case!!!! It might be my first one, hoping it is! Thanks for all in put!!!!!

Fingers crossed,

SnT

Re: I think it's a Cob? 4? 8?

Nope, looks like a hammered English silver Shilling circa 1580-1630ish

Actually the weight is closer to a halfcrown of that period.

English Hammered is great too ! I love seeing this early for this country silver ! It gives me hope of turning one out one day ! Great find ! MaineRelic

Re: I think it's a Cob? 4? 8?

Early English is harder to find than a cob so keep that space in the trophy case. ...but I'm not sure if you should clean it more.

Any chance you have a pic of one! Now I've got one from my English heritage (which I'm extremely proud of)! Time to crack a pint in celebration!! :occasion14:

Its a thousand times rarer to get an English hammered than a cob in the US :laughing9: :notworthy:

Without seeing more letters, the best guess is a Halfcrown of Elizabeth I but might be a bit later

Spot on Mate!!!
This is wicked Pissa! Soooo excited!! It has to be the 1594-1596 Elizabeth 1 shilling!!! The circles on both sides and the REGI is the identification needed!!!! I'm in shock! Thank you! :notworthy: :hello2: :headbang:

SnT

deleted that, its a little later

Pretty sure now its a Charles I 1625-49 Halfcrown :icon_thumright:

I can even see (on yours) where the sword of the King cut the outer circle.

NB. the reverse letters showing GNO.-.C are consistent (the positioning of the '.'s are spot on)

I'll check it out! I thought it was the Elizabeth!

Yep your right!!
It's Charles, the crown type symbols around the inner circle and under the top crown between REGNO and CHRIST I'm sure!!!
Thanks again nailed it down!!!!!
