I hit a copper signal very faint and it said it was between 6-8" down. Dug up the area down to 6" and set my pro pointer on low. I came upon a large coin and looked it over saw some Latin on it and first thing was there was a large shield or coat of arms on side I flipped it over ant the other side had what looked like a horses head. The coin is extremely corroded so I may be haulcinating but I know the one side with the shield looks like one on the pictures I have seen in the past when I was trying to identify a Vermont Copper I had found. Anyway, it's exciting but the soil up here in Unadilla is not kind to old copper coins that's for sure.

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

I just came across this post and did get the variety of your NJ Copper. 1787 Maris 68-w, Rarity 4, Very Scarce. I want to enter it in the survey and correct me if I am wrong that it was found on Ostego County. In the NJ survey it is only the 9th one ground found in the survey out of 1340 ID'd varieties.
