Hello Everyone,

I was working an area in Central RI, a place that has been very good to me in the past. The area being very early in American history usually gives up some buttons, coins, pottery and clay pipes, but not today! I brought four machines with me to cover all of my bases, one of them being the Minelab Explorer 2. Boy, I love that machine; its deep, has beautiful tones and with the Sun Ray 5” coil is a deadly metal detecting machine under the right condition. The machine setup was the following: sensitivity = 26, ferrous audio and wide open screen (I usually hunt this way); working an area that is wet most, if not all, year round. Today it wasn’t bad and with rubber boots, not a problem at all.

I wasn’t really gridding like usual, but rather using my “Free Style” approach, where I move where the feeling leads me. I know it sounds weird, but my friend Howard Hewitt (Digfellas) and I have had many discussions about this topic. We both agree there is something to it. Anyway, moving along a straight path for about 100 feet, I had the feeling to turn left and walk in that direction. After about 20 feet, I heard that familiar silver warble of the Explorer 2 audio system and the cursor in the upper right corner. I thought cool, a possible silver coin! After digging a 7”+ plug and probing with the pin pointer a bit, I found what was triggering the detector. A big nothing! I thought a small hunk of metal may have fooled me and the detector. After brushing off all the mud with a soft toothbrush I observed symbols that looked similar to many of the Real coins I have found, but I’m no expert. Upon return home, it was rinsed with water and weighed, coming in at 3.3 grams and fits just inside a seated dime. So I leave it up to the many experts on Tnet to help identify this interesting find.

If this coin like object is indeed a COB it would be my first!

Thank you for looking,

GL & HH

i KNOW you found a cob. I can't really tell if it's silver or brass/bronze/copper. The technical name for the bronze type is maravedis. I am sure someone here will help with the ID.

Congrats. That's a silver 1-R Cob. I believe the 1 reale weight is 3.5g so you're right in the ballpark. Could also be a clipped 2, but I'll leave that up to one of the experts.

Big congrats! It's very difficult to find dirt old enough for a cob.

If I found that I would be on cloud nine.

Wow, that's a beauty, far far from a cob expert bit I think it's almost 100% a cob. Congrats

A cob...I don't see any corn.

Okay, joking. Great find!

Wow!! That is super sweet....double barrel awesome !!

That is an excellent cob congrats!

I outa' pay more attention of these COB things. I think if I found one I'd probably throw it in my trash pouch!:BangHead: I hope yours is the real deal. :icon_thumleft:

Congratulations Doc! That's how you do it!! I have found some of my favorite coins/ relics by listening to my gut. I don't know why this method seems to work...it just does. Well done!
