I started wearing gloves after I...

No poison ivy out here on the left coast. There is poison oak though, and that's the same deal as ivy, green or dry, it will get you. If burning poison oak, then the smoke is the worse. When I was a pre-teen, there was a tree with a couple of branches ideal for a tree house, right over the top of a large poison oak bush. In the process of building a platform I fell into the bush. Could barely see, pp just dribbled out, my entire body was itching. When that cured up, I've never got it again. I don't use gloves when digging, never much thought about it. Use gloves building barbed wire fence, splitting firewood and trimming roses. Rest of the time I don't think about it.

I really like Ansell Hyflex foam gloves which are only about $3 a pair. They are a light knit on the top and black rubbery stuff on the bottom. And for those lady hunters with tiny hands like mine, they come in an extra small size that fits perfect.

I use the thin Mechanix brand gloves and they haven't bothered me too much, yet. I know one day I'm just going to rip them off and just say forget it.

So it seems like not too many people have had their hands maimed?

I probably should wear them but don't, I can't feel the coin when I reach in to pull it out. I make slits so I won't have to cut plugs. I hunt open grassy areas so I can see the poison ivy creeping up to get me! Lol!

I am a one handed glove wearer, the right hand only. There is a difference between being a pu$$y and being stupid.... Being an electrician, I get my hands beat up enough at work so that's the last thing I need is a cut with stitches or a sore finger for a couple of days because my hobby beat my hands up to hinder my day at work. I do have an advantage as my shop supplies gloves as PPE that is required on some jobs. After wearing them out at work, I bring the old pair home and only use the right hand to work the dirt with as my pin pointer is in my left hand. They are super tough and fit like a latex glove (super tight and comfy) but never gets cuts in it, As it is made from the same material that body armor is made from. The palms and fingers are coated with a thin layer of latex-type material so gripping my Lesche and coins/finds is better than a bare finger and keeps my hands clean for my snacks!

I buy cheap gloves from harbor freight. They are part latex part cloth and they are a bit thin but last a while i would hate to have glass/a rusty nail or broken piece of metal to slice my fingers.

for those of you who think that gloves are to big and clumsy, get yourself a pair of good fitting, good mechanics gloves. They are designed to protect your hands but still give you manual dexterity

Thanks for the tip Susan. I always wear Atlas brand gloves, they have small sizes too but I will look for the Ansell brand. I can't imagine not wearing gloves to metal detect, too many scary surprises in the ground that could cut you,not to mention they keep your hands looking nicer.

I agree!they makes is harder to find those smaller objects, but I don't use one of those pin pointer things either.I usually just wear them only when its cold.

I have three little ones and as they get old my weekends have become less for me and more for them. Baseball, Football, Cheerleading, Music Lessons, etc. The only time I have that is truely mine is my lunch hour. Since I work in an office and usually have meetings or interviewing people in the afternoon I don't want muddy hands and dirt under my nails so I wear gloves. Man I've gone soft as I've aged...lol.
