Ok hike forever into the woods today , nasty heat thick air horrible bugs and no good targets for a few hours. I finally get what seems to be a nickel signal on my dfx . I dug down About 4in and I pulled out and have no clue what it is. The loop and base seem to be wood or some kind of weird composite the pipe thing is brass and steel it says made in Chicago on the front side and a company named Schwehzer & unreadable**
I was thinking some kind of salesmen sample? There's gotta be someone who can Identify this whatsit

I think the square emblem says "S and C' If I had to guess an age from looking at it I'd go with anywhere from the 1920's to the late 40's, but that's a complete stab in the dark.... Let me poke around a bit and see what I can find

The company is still in business since 1911, try sending them a pic and see if they can id it for you : About S&C Electric Company

Good catch. Thats got to be it. Been in business over 100 years. electric S&C 100-year-logo.webpCelebrating a Century of Innovation

S & C was formed as Schweitzer and Conrad, Inc in 1911, building on their invention of a safety fuse that could prevent overload of electrical utilities. In 1947 they bought 6 acres along Ridge for new facilties. By 1971 they had expanded to fill nearly 50 acres. In 2002 they enlarged their Rogers Park plant along Pratt Avenue. You can follow their history in more detail on their website. http://ultralocal.blogspot.com/2010/05/s-electric-6601-n-ridge.html

Is that bakelite or ceramic?

http://www.eosmfg.com/history.html Edmund O. Schweitzer began designing and manufacturing innovative products for the electric power industry in 1909, when he partnered with Nicholas J. Conrad to develop the first reliable high-voltage fuse. This development resulted in Schweitzer & Conrad, the company known today as S&C Electric Company. Later product developments included fuse mountings, disconnect switches, lightning arresters, and metal-enclosed switchgear. He also spent much of his career at the Commonwealth Edison Company in Chicago.

Be careful the tube may be filled with carbon tetrachloride.

After a particularly bad fire in 1909 at Commonwealth Edison’s Fisk Generating Station in Chicago, the utility asked Edmund O. Schweitzer and Nicholas J. Conrad to find a better way to tame high-voltage arcing. Together, they came up with the Liquid Power Fuse, a spring-loaded fuse inside a glass tube filled with a fire-suppressing liquid, carbon tetrachloride. When short-circuit current melted the fuse, the spring was released and stretched out the arc, which was “quenched” inside the tube. After the faulted circuit was repaired and a new fuse was installed, the old fuse could be rebuilt.

Really you think I should try haha I wonder if it would get any hits, I'm still trying to figure out how old it is.

Thats the good thing about eBay. You never know someone may want this item. Maybe... maybe not. Listing auctions are free so you have nothing to lose..
