It's a #4. But I found it at a civil war site.. and you know how we all want it to be a civil war relic but I don't know for sure. Does anyone know? IMG_1345.JPGIMG_1346.JPGIMG_1347.JPG
 

could it be a regiment # I've seen something like it on ebay listed as civil war regiment #

No doubt it was mounted to leather, due to the very small distance from the back of the "4" to the inside of the rivet head. Very well could be off of civil war era horse tack. Maybe horses that pulled caissons, cannons, or other equipment that had to have numbered sets for inventory and ease of assembly? That font style is antique too. Sub 8-)

It looks like the lettering off of a hame over .. possibly from a sutler.

I dug a "1" almost identical to yours in a city park a few weeks ago. Mine turned out to be a house number. Mine was also 19th century and made of solid brass.

I think it could be Civil War yes but I cant find the link on these. I used to have a good link but i lost it all on my old computer

Well, I thought about house numbers too initially. But I'm so far in the country they didn't have them till recently and more importantly, this thing has rivets like to attach to leather.
