I Know What It Is, But I Don't Know What Caliber Or Era

Hello all, it has been a long time since I've posted on here and hope all are doing well. I have something a lot easier than the pig nuts to identify...I can hear the sighs now. I found this old round a while back and would like to know the caliber, and era of this shell. It measures 9" long, and 3" wide. It is very heavy. This is an easy one and I know it won't be long before I know exactly what it is, and what it was fired from. Thanks for any help, and I hope you have all found a fortune since I've been gone. :D

I have wondered the same thing about it being a munition. I have had it over 30 years, and when we were young and stupid, we used to see if we could set it off through the hole in the bottom, Not up close though. It has been through a lot of experiments and rough handling, but now that I am older and have found it again, since being lost for a long time, I thought I might see what it is that I am dealing with.

I have a similar brass shell casing and I think the caliber is marked in millimeters on the bottom. Seems like mine says 105mm.....I think. I'll have to look tomorrow.

This has no casing, just the shell...

Doesnt the red color signify H.E. High Explosive? Jimbob

Tracer -or- incindiary probebly... H.E. is generally gold or yellow, and in the case of modern duel-purpose, blue.

Forgive me, I'm not up on the munitions lingo. Pigg's is just the projectile? without the casing? And I have just the casing? Is that right? Maybe we should get these two items mated together if thats the case. So if this is just the projectile it could possibly still be live?

By casing I mean the shell... it looks like this is only the projectile, the ribs to the rear are designed to provide spin during flight. I do believe this MIGHT BE UNEXPLODED ORDANANCE.... but, 30 years later he's still alive.

Unless it's been safed, there is always danger IMO.

The shell casing would have information stamped on it like your piece does 72.

What is the millimeter measurement across the base?

Gotcha MJ, thanks! Hopefully this thing has been "safed". I'm pretty sure my casing says 105mm, does that sound right?

It is exactly 3" across the bottom. I'm not that up on my metrics. Yes, it is just the shell, not the casing if there was one. No markings anywhere.

1 in= 25.4mm

The base is exactly 3", the rifleing, or fins sticks out a little further, maybe 1/8". The hole in the base goes in about 1/2" and is then solid.
