MD Dog said:
Ok first off the x on top is actually a pair of crossed sabers a insignia of the 1st calvary. the eagle denotes the army. Dating can be deduced by the wear and tear at around 1940-1970

Me thinks they are crossed cannons Dog...

I don't think so jim. Look at the lower left of the x and you'll see the saber handle

I can see your point MDDOG, but could that not be some pitting? The other part does not seem to have the same handle and the opposite end seems to more match the cannon.

Could it be possible, one would be a sword and another a cannon? Can we compromise? ;D

Re: I know one of you "treasurologist" ca help me out

I checked the department of defense website and theres no history of a mixed crossed saber and canon ever issued for U.S. in any branch. As far as the other side not having the handle that could simply be from wear and tear. Or it could be that they are both canons and I could be wrong, either way it's fairly well dated at circa 1940-1970 based on wear.

Closest ring I could find to this ring was one on Ebay with crossed rifles and the guy wouldn't answer my messages . Thanks for all of the searching and googling and researching it is all very much appreciated . 8) John

I'd guess 1920s-1930s... maybe a "sweetheart locket" sort of thing. Looks like artillery to me, maybe with a spot of damage.
Probably the OSS, secret-cyanide-pill story is a little far out, IMO. :)
Maybe a stupid question, but do you know if your grandfather (or his father or brothers, etc.) were in the service?
Anyway, real nice piece! Congrats.

According to the web site:

gold military ring has crossed cannons on it which was the symbol for artillery from the Civil War to WW1. It's probably from between 1870 and 1920. It is very unique and I have never seen one before.
