I know it's a bullet but what kind?

Was up in the Sierras poking around with the MD.

Found this ricochet bullet.

Here is what I know...

1. It's a bullet.
2. It's lead.

Measurements of the rifling marks made at the base of the bullet.
3. The groove from the rifling (land in the barrel) measures approx. 0.100
4. The ridge from the rifling (groove in the barrel) measures approx. 0.110
5. The best approximation I can make as to caliber is around .30 cal. maybe. :dontknow:
Granted, the measurements aren't accurate because of the bullet deformity, but maybe the measurements might be helpful.

That's about all I know of it. :tongue3:

Well from the patina I can tell you it's fairly old, my best guess is that it might be a .32 cal pistol bullet. whatever it is, it hit something pretty solid!

I was thinking 32 cal pistol as well.

Taking a guess, how old would you think it is?

yes..takes quite some time for lead to oxidize nice white patina...the projectile you found has nice land groves, count them ,5 or 6 land groves suggest fired from smith & wesson or colt 38. calibre firearm, probably fired at snake...as bullet took direct hit.
