When I flipped the plug over and saw the silver edge of a rim that was the size and shape of a silver dollar I got a big ole smile on my face. NOPE, it was a pendant that was the size and shape of silver dollar. My heart sank!

After I wiped on it some and saw the sterling silver stamp and the date of 1929, I got my big ole smile back on my face. It's a very unusual trophy pendant and it must have an interesting history behind it. I sure would like to know something about it's past.

I'm lucky to have found it. I was detecting a 5 foot grassy area between the curb and city sidewalk in front of a house when a car drove up and parked in the driveway. A man got out and walked down to where I standing and asked me what I was doing. I told him what I was doing and then did some small talk with him. We got along just fine. I found out that him and his wife had just closed on the house and he was going to rip out all the shrubs, grass and build an addition onto the house. Long story short, I got permission to do his entire yard and he told me not to worry about me making a mess. lol

Get a neon safety vest ....Yellow hard hat... Just say I'm with the water authority :dontknow: Great finds!!

That’s an awesome find Tabman, congrats. Yeah, I know a silver dollar would have been nice, but it could have been one of those big aluminum tokens. That thing is silver, dated and has a name on it, pretty cool IMO.

Good luck sir.

That is a great find! I tried looking it up but only found Memphis swim races. Christopher (doc) Hottum seems to be the organizer, and a character to boot.

I have yet to find a silver dollar and would devoutly love to find one, but I think that medal is even better. Well done!

tabman, that is one sweet big medal of silver, and it is of dollar size too. I have found Josten's jewlery of silver before and they do beautiful work. Have ever found a U.S. silver dollar?I wonder what the first place medal looked like?

Man he was a character! He dove off the Memphis railroad bridge into the Memphis River to prove it could be done without killing yourself. He had to hit that dive just right. lol

Hello tabman. I agree with muttandjeeps. That's better than a silver dollar...a one of a kind find...way better!

Thanks for the post and Good Luck out there. C9

Nice find Tabman!

Isn't that the exact mileage for a running Marathon? You might want to check with a local historian, to check out if there was a local marathon back then.....

Sweet find and great job on the permission! GL!

Awesome find Tabman, a great historical item attached to persons life! :occasion14:

The 26 Mi 385 yds. Is the marathon distance ,i don't know what Hottum is (place/ name ?) So this is a nice 2cnd place medal for Vernon Webb in the 1929 marathon - possibly in a place called Hottum.

Since I've got ONE...just one-silver dollar, I would have much rather found that medal! Mr. Vernon Webb placed 2nd in a marathon, that is some feat, considering it would take me about 3 months to walk/run/crawl that far...I ran to the garage this weekend (approx 50 yards) and was severely winded...ugh, I really need to lay off the Taco Bell and the cancer sticks lol...Tab, certainly one awesome save! So where is the gold medal? Maybe you can find that too!!

When I saw 26 miles, I new you had a Marathon Medal, Silver is for second place and is quite an accomplishment.
Congrats on a personalized trophy.
