I remember reading years ago about the french surrender of montreal to the british in 1760. the british general told the french general that there was no way the british could have taken montreal since the forifications were so good. (the french were ordered to surrender by the king).
the french general misunderstood him and broke his sword before handing it over to the british general. the british were outraged and sacked the governors mansion. supposedly they took a silver gate, or the silver and the gate.
do any of you know of this or a book that has it in it ? I also read the gate was lost on a shipwreck.
