I got $800 ...what MD should I get

Welcome to the forum Mole! I have the Minelab Quattro and have no regrets. I love it! I found it to have ?a small learning curve, and the depth is excellent. I use mine primarly at the beach, and have recovered targets in some pretty deep holes!

There are a lot of MXT users on the forum and I'm sure you'll get opinions from them too. From what I've read, it too is an excellent machine! Tough decision. I decided on the Quattro because it works good in wet sand, and the depth. My suggestion is to read all the field test you can find on the internet, take your time, and make your decision.

I found a couple sites that can get you started: http://www.thomasathomas.com/treasure_articles.htm, http://www.metaldetectorreviews.net/

Hi Mole, if I had this decision to make I would go with a Garrett GTI2500. Garrett sold me with the ACE250 so I would probably stick with them. The 2500 is top of their line and offers many features not found on others. Just my idea, check around and get what you're comfortable with. Most important to enjoy whatever you buy.

Test drive as many as you can. This will be the determining factor in your decision to buy. That said, I'm a proud owner of a Whites MXT and have to say that you can't go wrong buying one of these machines. It hasn't dissappointed me yet. Small learning curve(I'm still a noob at Md'ing) not too heavy, well balanced batteries last 40 hours too. Good luck on your decision.

If it were me,

I'd go with either the new Mine-Lab Sovereign GT Multiple Frequency Detector

1.5 kHz to 25.5 kHz, (same thing as an EX-CAL 1000) except it's not submersible, but has some added features over the ex-cal, has a good design, goes deep, plus there's a lot less learning curve than the Quattro,

OR

The dual Frequency Fisher CZ20 - 3 KHz and 15 KHz which is a proven machine for finding gold, silver, etc. on land or in the water down to 250 ft. also, it has a good design, is hip mountable for extreme light weight, and built like a tank with a "lifetime" warrantee, and a short learning curve also.

If you don't need the fancy doodads, the Tesoro Tejon is the depth king and a lot cheaper than the other name brands depth hogs. The lifetime warranty is the kicker.

you could get a nice GTI 2500 for that amount...

The Whites is by far the best balanced of the 2 you mentioned but I really like the design Minelab came up with for the Explorer II and Quattro. The coil cable is inside the shaft and I like the cam locks for adjusting the shaft and taking the detector apart. Minelab's are using the DD coils which give you a wider effective sweep but pinpointing with a DD coil takes a little getting use to.
