That is a curious piece. I'm not sure what it is. My brother john37115 recently found a piece that looks like the left half of it. Maybe his was broken. Good Luck

Something about that little whatever it is kept coming to mind. I got to lookin' through some pics of some of my recent hunts and guess what. I found one of those. I just thought it was maybe some kind of picture hanger. Mine is a bit folded over. but here is a pic. I did find some definite civil war relics at the same site where this was found. I think it is meant to be folded now that I hear yours was also folded. I'd like to know more about it also. Thanks KirkTN

What era would you guess MJ

Victorian... or a little later (justa guess). And it's suppossed to be bent by the way. Like in the second (Kirk's) photo. :)

I'm trying to pinpoint it - it seems so damned familiar.

I'm trying to rember where I put mine. Thought it may have some writing that I hadn't noticed before. If I find out it does, I'll post it. Thanks MJ. If you find out somethin' let us know Neil.

It does remind me of a picture hanger, or the part that holds the wire on the back of the picture frame. I dunno. :-\ I can see the stress marks where yours was folded back. Its a wonder it didnt break.

Not positive, but I think garter or suspender buckle piece.

Jim, you're exactly right.  Garter buckle.  Suspender buckles of the Victorian Era were frequently plated, or had some sort of design.  Garter clips a little more utilitarian.  Also, the method of attaching them to what they were holding up was different.  This piece has a place for a button to slide in--as opposed to the suspender buckle, which most frequently had a little hook on the bottom.

I can take a picture of a suspender clip easily--I have several dug ones. As far as garters go...I can't find a photo of a metal clip online, but they're still designed in a similar way, only with a plastic clip. I don't own any garter belts though. :P

Kirk,

Thanks for your help. I actually found it in the condition you did back in November. I unbent it last night for the photo! I am glad I didn't do that to a British grenadier uniform buckle or something! I also found a large Musket ball at the site .69 caliber which may have fired from a British Brown Bess.

Not discounting what was found, but back in the 50's or 60's there was such thing as a sanitary napkin garter belt. It was used to hold it in its place. I had seen one before and as a kid, was told what it was. But, I can't remember what the snaps or buckles were made of. Almost reminded me of a jockstrap with the cup being replaced by the " Napkin" ???..........NGE
