You never know what will come out of the ground. You detect a site over and over again and find clad, tabs, slaw, foil, nails and stuff and then BAM out pops a goodie. The campus keeps proving that point. The other day I went back to the athletic field I have been working and I found a nice assortment of things including my first Eagle I button.
The weather was not great to start. It was 25 and there was a heavy frost so my coil was getting a nice coat ice as I swung it through the grass. Luckily the sun was coming out and it warmed up after a few hours and the ice melted off the coil.
I have found over 1,000 civil war bullet in my years of detecting but less than a dozen CW buttons so any button is a nice find to me. Unfortunately this one is in really rough shape. It was a good mid tone signal. You can clearly see the left side of the Eagle and the shield and can make out the remnants of an I. The shank is gone and the backmark is in even worse shape than the eagle so no ID on the maker. But it as still a thrill to find. I’ll keep swingin and maybe I will find a better one someday.
I spent 6 hours swingin the CZ21 and all together I found....coins with a face value of $2.80 a plated piece of necklace chain, a cheapy heart from a hair pin, a cheapy crucifix, a round ball, the button, an interesting mashed lid and 2 John Quincy Adams tokens.
The John Quincy Adams tokens are aluminum and look like a promotional give away of some kind, but I can’t find a match on line so I can’t get a date on them. They were about 20 feet apart and gave a nice high token signal. They look like they might be from the 70s or 80s.
The lid looks like some sort of lead alloy. I have no idea what it was used for and would appreciate any info you can share if you have seen one of these before.
So another fun hunt with 2 oldies, a curiosity and gas money. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
