I found this coin yesterday at an old rail station stop. It's heavily worn, iron stained, and the last digit of the date is difficult (if not impossible) to read. At first glance I thought it might be a 2, but then it started looking like an 8 under magnification. Hoping to get some more eyes on it, and opinions on what you think it might be. The coin is an S mint mark BTW. Thanks!

Thanks for the opinions, my eyes were giving my brain mixed signals. If it is an 1892S, it's a more desirable date. Too bad it's not in better condition, but I'll take it!

How much does it cost to have it graded? Would it be worth it? It's in pretty rough shape.

Very Nice!!!!!! Congrats!!!!

it would be awesome it were a 92 but being damaged as it is a low grade details coin is not worth the cost of a TPG
but looking at it I will side with 98...but still a great find
Itll always be memorable for you

Looks like a “2” to me also, but it looks like it’s crooked. Like an error or something maybe...

I tend to agree with you ironhorse, in regards to the grading. Wishful thinking on my behalf I suppose. On the bright side, my wife has informed me that she knows that there has to be more old coins at the site. So off we will go on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Northern Arizona. Thanks everyone!

Nice find! "2" is the first thing I saw...

Thanks everyone. It's not my first Barber Half, but it was a potential key or semi-key date. The coin is pretty well toasted, but I like it just the same.

My 2 cents- looks like a 2 to me with perhaps the damage causing the re-positioned effect. As for grading, I'd pass on a coin with that much wear and damage. Regardless- fantastic find and big time Congrats!

my vote is 1892. First year of issue, it's a shame it's all dinged up but it's an awesome find regardless. congrats!

Honestly, I looked at it, and looked at it and I just can't tell what number it is. Congratulations anyway because that is a nice piece of silver! Thanks for sharing.

Minority opinion. I believe it could be an eight but I am equally divided between that and a two.
