I see the diagram - what I don't see is the same part :dontknow: :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

It looks like it could be a terret but Im going with chain pump part. Some have a groove for a leather/rubber seal and some do not. Besides the diagram, we have at least 2 other examples, one with the chain still attached from a pump and another dug up with the leather washer.

I'm not trying to be a 'pita", but, heaven help me, I see nothing in any of the pump/chain photos that looks like the parts that have been found.

That's why I've been looking up "parts" - but, by golly, I cannot find one for the life of me!!

I understand the leather washer, etc., but I just don't see anything that looks like what was found - sorry.

No problem Mrs. O. 8) The diagram does not show it very clearly, I agree. Its where it says "chain hook." But the next two pictures, if I understand correctly, came from creskol's well. Two others found, one with the leather gasket remains, match very well IMO.

Maybe creskol can explain better.

OK I see what you are looking at. It has a different loop. Its a different type but the same principle. I think a better pic from Johnnyi will help.

Can you find a better matching terret pic? Do they make them in lead?

Terrets are made in all different metals - from brass to the older ones, which were made in lead.

I'm not trying to argue that it is a terret (though I will look for a better picture) - I'm just trying to work out the mechanics of it. (I can see the two shaped things together, like the picture - as probably turning while in use, or jointed, but not a stationery item).

Maybe a better picture would help me "get it" - its interesting - I like this kind of thing - figuring out how things were put together and the how and why of it. That's why I was trying to look it up under "parts", to see what it is called (if it is that) and how/why its there.

Please forgive my asking, but what is it that needs to be explained. I will try my best. Thanks

Re: i found a watchamacallit ?? i don't know....

I'll try to explain.

The item that is being identified as something to a pump. It is a stationery piece. The pictures I have seen look like it is a different object (either jointed or swiveling). I cannot figure out how a stationery piece fits into the action of the chain on the pump, even with a gasket.

I would like to see a picture of some sort, so I could see how a stationery object (with or without a gasket) fits into a pump - and what its called.

I would understand a jointed, swiveling piece - so that the chain doesn't get twisted while being used, and still retain a seal, of sorts, - just not one that doesn't move.

I done alot of work on different kinds of industrial pumps (including the chain-operated for opening and closing), but I cannot seem to visualize this particular piece.

I'm just looking to understand how it fits into the workings. (I know, I've gone from what is it to 'how the heck does that work?" :dontknow:

B

Does that help explain what I'm trying to ask?

Re: i found a watchamacallit ?? i don't know....

The chain pump is a type of water pump where an endless chain has positioned on it a series of circular discs. One end of the chain dips in to the water, and the chain runs through a tube, slightly bigger than the diameter of the discs. As the chain is drawn up the tube, water becomes trapped between the discs and is lifted to and discharged at the top.

I had forgotten....I used to work on a hog farm and they used the same principale only plastic to move feed along tracks to feed the sows. when the pile reached as high as the feed track, it would continue on down the track to fill the next pile. It only worked with cracked corn

Maybe it does swivel. It moves with the chain as it is cranked, lifting the water. I thought it DID swivel to keep from getting twisted. Maybe its frozen.

Re: i found a watchamacallit ?? i don't know....

creskol posted a good diagram of how it works. The chain rides between a double sprocket which catches the links. there is not a problem of twisting because half the chain is suspended slack. The doohickies themselves are solid cast pieces and do not swivel, as there is no need for a swivel in this arrangement.

I think that is a link out of an old cistern style chain pump.

The links on my chain are a different type, but the principle is the same.
hey creskol what kind of program do you use to type over a picture??
