I went detecting at an old high school that closed after the new school was finished. I had permission to detect here before it closed, but I stayed off the athletic fields. Now that they are not using the fields I started detecting them. Today I did a 4.5 hour survey trip. I just wandered around swingin the CZ21 to see what spots might have goodies. This helps me decide where I want to start my thorough searching. I started on the end of the football field digging all mid and high tone signals. About an hour into the hunt I got a mixed mid high that was tight but faint. When I popped the plug I pinpointed the plug and wiped a little dirt off of a .44 cal. pistol bullet. This site was an encampment during the civil war and the hill across the road was used as a target range. I have pulled hundreds of bullet off of the hill (over 20 different varieties). This is the first bullet from the school. The school was built in the late 1920s and was built onto and remodeled several times over the years so the ground has been turned over and moved around a lot making civil war finds here hard to come by.
About a half hour later I got another interesting signal and found a nice little flat button with a mashed shank. The backmark is a mystery though. It looks like it says SHORTHOUSE on the top and across the bottom I can see PE–-SON. The center part of the bottom word is blocked by the mashed shank. If anyone knows anything about this mark I would greatly appreciate any help you can give.
After about 2 hours of digging coins, tabs and other miscellaneous metal I dug a signal and the target was not in the plug. I pinpointed the hole and found a nickel size disc with rough crud stuck to it on both sides. I could see the edge and it did look like a nickel. I rubber the edge on my coveralls and it got shiny so I knew it was a war nickel. I dropped it forcefully against the bucket lid I use to put dirt on and the front crud popped off revealing Jefferson. It is a 1943S and you can still see some of the black crud around the bottom waiting to be cleaned off.
I continued for a while longer and took a short time to do a little swingin on the baseball field. I found a few coins and some junky bits of copper and brass, but nothing noteworthy.
All in all I found 78 coins with a face value of $6.22, a miniature car made in China, a key, the Civil War bullet, the flat button, the war nickel and 4 wheaties (1927, 1939, 1950S, and 1957).
So a good hunt with gas money a little silver, a little history, and a nice walk in the sunshine. Tomorrow I will be back at the scout camp before the snow falls there tomorrow night.
Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
