This piece was found on a multi occupation site. items have been recovered from a 17th century Spanish fort that existed there.. also Second Seminole War items from a fort built on the same site. I can't help but think that this is some sort of a pendant. there appears to be what's left of a attachment loop on what looks like the top. Where Lead pendants ever made? Any help would be great...thanks.

I totally understand, and like I said in my first post, 'you're holding it in your hand, and we're judging from a photo.' Keep us posted, and good luck! :) Breezie

This piece is certainly spilled lead. If it isn't oxidized enough to look old, then it is more modern spilled lead. A piece like that, if it were a brooch, would either be hand-carved (and there is no sign of that, since there are no cut marks), or cast in a mold (which this obviously isn't--or if it was, it was the worst, most unskilled casting I've ever seen, since you can't even see what the design was *supposed* to be). I have seen much melted lead, dug from sites that date from the 1700s up through the Civil War, and sometimes I think it might be something. Folks have even posted melted lead on here saying it was an animal, person, or some other figure. I posted one here as a joke saying that it was an eagle, and commented on a friends thread jokingly that he had found lead in the shape of the state of Louisiana. I guess if you stare at something long enough, you can see just about anything that you want. And if you already are convinced that it's Not melted lead, then you perhaps shouldn't have posted it here asking for our experience, help, and ideas. But any way you dice it, it's just a piece of melted lead. Scratch the "back" of it with a knife and I'll be willing to bet you it'll shine like silver and be soft to cut. Take me up on the challenge, and post a photo here. -Buck

Why would I scratch something I already know is lead? That is not in question. your statement about oxidation is flat wrong when it comes to a low oxygen high p.h. enviornment. I showed musket balls from 1838 to prove that. So... Your opinion sir...Is just that..an opinion that followed proof of a lack of complete understanding of the preservation of lead in certain environments. Which would bring into question the validity of your opinion....that you state as fact.

the lead item might not be just lead * but rather pewter --a lead based mixture that was very commonly used to make many things , including some types of jewelry items and stone mountings -- pewter due to the "other metals" mixed in with the lead was much harder than mere lead alone would be --lead in its pure form is quite soft and ill suited for use for the types of things that pewter was made into --pewter was very heavily used -- pewter greatly fell out of favor when they found out that lead was deadly to use for plates and drinking cups

You are absolutely correct. Here is a pewter ( lead- tin) button from the same site. Note the lack of oxidation.

I also want to restate the fact that this was the site of early contact with Native Americans. So to compare with molded lead and lead cut with metal tools my be of Base. I want to post this photo of a native American deity referred to as Kokapelli for a different possibility.

Awesome. Well, I have seen and recovered non-oxidized lead too, and I assure you that I have much more than a "lack of complete understanding" when it comes to the thousands of bullets and camp lead pieces I have dug. The fact remains that it is spilled lead, not a brooch. Please feel free to post photos of lead brooches and pendants. I don't recall ever seeing one in over 20 years of digging. If you aren't open to others' "opinions," then your posts are not welcome in the "What is it?" section of the forum as far as I'm concerned. If you already *know* what it is, why ask? And why toss out other folks' information with a "thanks for your opinion." That's just rude. Next time, post in "Today's Finds." In that section of the forum, folks will be eager to tell you what you want to hear. Good luck with the next relic you need identified. -Buck

It really doesn't make you look good to continually state your opinions as if they are fact. the fact is you don't know everything..... none of us do. And you obviously don't know about lead pendants... at least you didn't until now... your welcome. I asked for some help. you should in no way assume that adds up to an experience level below your own. These are all Dug. They have been recovered From shipwrecks as well. So if you could please state your opinion as the opinion that it is anyone asking for help will have a much higher chance at getting to the truth if your information is incorrect. If you took any of this as rude I suggest re reading your post.

Gator, when you ask for help and opinions on the forum your going to get all opinions and some may not agree with yours... Please don't attack them because their opinion doesn't coincide with yours...

That was not an "attack" my only opinion at this point is when I am flooded with misinformation and forced to fix it I get singled out.

Any help would be great...thanks.

Your not flooded with misinformation, you asked for opinions, but anytime someone has given an opinion that leans towards it being melted lead you have lashed out at the member here and in our artifact forum even the forum itself... When you ask for opinions you understand your going to get opposing opinions or views and except them with out lashing out even if you don't believe or agree with them...

Concider that done. But Please tell me You just read the part Where I was told It is spilled lead and if I don't agree with that I should leave. How is that OK...? Am I entitled to an opinion that it is not spilled lead and search for an answer or a similar example of what it might be? just as others are entitled to their opinion?
