On Dec. 22 I started a thread about some things I found in a couple soybean fields. I had one GIANT target that I for whatever reason thought was a disc from a plow. A couple of days ago I seen it laying next to my scrap metal bucket and thought to myself that it could not of been part of a farmers tractor pulled disc because it didn't have a hole in the middle. I still didn't think that much of it, still thinking it was a piece of steel. It poured rain yesterday and today I glanced at it and thought it had a glint of brass about it. This is what I originally seen.

Then some brass.

Then the other side.

That's a clad dime for scale, it's made of brass, must weigh about five pounds, Has anyone seen anything like this? I'll bet the farmer will like not hitting this anymore with his plow!

Thanks for looking, HH everyone!

This is a stretch, but it is interesting:

Major search engine, typed in "CECLIFT" with no results; dropped the "C" thinking it might be a first initial = no results; dropped the "E" as well, thinking maybe Clift was a last name, and C.E. first two initials. Got a results for William "Bill" Clift (1762-1840), a well known English jockey.... perhaps a family member C.E. Clift made this as a memento of a couple of his winning rides....?

Weak

I propose that your discovery is an antique table-top "Dinner Gong", used to summon folks to the house or dining room. The broken "hanging brackets" would support this. It is also possible that the artist's initials are 'C. E." and he was based in Clifton, South Carolina. As usual, I may be way off but it is a fun hypothesis!

a09h3.jpgShame I can't get Surf's attachments to open, his image of the "rough riders" is a perfect match for the image on this 9 inch plaque. I'm going to try and attach the image of the 7th Calvary rough riders belt buckle

I would think it's a commemorative piece of the 7th Calvary Rough riders.
nice find , Bill
I do believe you nailed it, I'm going to try and find out from the homeowner what she knows. I'm going to give her the piece if she wants it. One interesting thing, the property borders a property that had a horse racetrack that used to have sulky races in the early 1900's, I was told the 30's. I know for a fact that this property was HAMMERED by metal detectors over the last forty years. The field I was in and the house I was told to the best of their knowledge they did not know of it being detected. The son (who is my age) told me he remembers people detecting all the time in the bordering property when he was in his early years ( 60's-80's)
