On Dec. 22 I started a thread about some things I found in a couple soybean fields. I had one GIANT target that I for whatever reason thought was a disc from a plow. A couple of days ago I seen it laying next to my scrap metal bucket and thought to myself that it could not of been part of a farmers tractor pulled disc because it didn't have a hole in the middle. I still didn't think that much of it, still thinking it was a piece of steel. It poured rain yesterday and today I glanced at it and thought it had a glint of brass about it. This is what I originally seen.

Then some brass.

Then the other side.

That's a clad dime for scale, it's made of brass, must weigh about five pounds, Has anyone seen anything like this? I'll bet the farmer will like not hitting this anymore with his plow!

Thanks for looking, HH everyone!

That is really interesting treblehunter! I am really curious to see if anyone knows what it could be. You just never know do you.

Very interesting artifact!

For future reference, the green coloring indicates that it is copper or brass based. Farm implements are made from steel or iron.

Good luck in getting an ID on it!

Man, that's a big piece! Pretty cool too! Thank god you didn't launch it in trash. Can't tell from the pics, Is it cast or stamped? Anyways, never seen one, but i'm sure someone here can shed some light on it.

Is it possible that this is some sort of small battle shield?

Neat piece indeed!

When I first found it, I had just entered the field ten feet off edge of field. The first thing that entered my head was that it was a disc from a modern disc plow pulled by a modern tractor. I threw it towards the edge of field not really thinking much about it. A week later, I noticed it was bronze and still thought it was scrap because I didn't look at both sides, the next day(yesterday) I spotted the horse. Sometimes my quest for old silver coins makes me dismiss things like this too quickly. If I had taken the time to really look at the target the day I found it, I would have easily seen it was brass. Heck, I left it laying there until three days later because I had forgot all about it.

Maybe someone's art project from long ago?
I think it is a piece of artwork, but definitely not a school project.

Its not stamped, must be cast I guess. If you look at Surfs post and open the link the back side of those plates have what you can see as it being stamped.

Hey treble,

Very cool rediscovery, sir. What is the diameter in inches, instead of dimes? I'm guessing 8+. That deserves mo'betta photos, in my opinion.

It's nine inches, I'll post some more pix in a little while. It is a quarter inch thick (very thick, heavy duty) When I get back from pheasant hunting I'll take some more pix in the daylight and after my attempt to straighten it out.

Nice guess, but much too small for that, I believe it is some type of art work, I have looked closely at the back side for any type of markings or evidence of a hanger, Will have to look some more. My 53 yr old eyes are not the best but there not that bad. The plow really did some damage to the piece, I might take a hammer to it and straighten it out on some concrete. It doesn't really feel like it is going to bend that easy.

Ah yes, the quest for silver! I know it well. Hopefully this piece helps you slow down and dig a wider range of signals in old field sites. LOTS of great stuff to be found besides silver coins, although I really love finding those too!

I would think it's a commemorative piece of the 7th Calvary Rough riders.
nice find , Bill

A wall plaque maybe?

How about some sort of protection for a horse? :icon_scratch:

Don't know how the bent parts are, from the back. But, make sure there's nothing stamped in one of the most bent parts before you start hammering. :)

Could this be a heat reflector? I have seen reflectors in historic houses in the fireplace, but none with horses. Very interesting to find such a large piece in the middle of a field. Is there evidence of of an old house in the field?

it might be trench art of some sort - or some sort of folk art - that's what it feels like to me...

I got some pix in the daylight, found a artist signature on the front side that reads, "CECLIFT" and under it SC in smaller fonts. I took some closeups of what appears to be a broken off strap/hanger. I straighten it out with a mallet/maul and a 2x4, sandwiched between 2x8's
First pix are before I hammered it, then the rest are after my metal work with a maul.
