Made a lot of shakes with a froe and mallet but the mallet was always made of wood to keep from mushrooming the top edge of the froe you were striking. We had easy splitting red cedar tho' maybe with oak or ash you would need a more extreme weapon. could Lumbercamps find be a cap for a 4" pipe maybe on a steam or deisel engine. Think I've seen similiar on old oil filler pipe and maybe exhaust pipe to keep rain out.

The one on the bottom right.... it looks like it has holes for nails or screws.... are they countersunk?

Ralphw, the holes are the spaces between the wedges. The points of the wedges are all gone on this one. I'm kind of cautious on doing electrolysis on these as the only thing holding the wedges to the inside metal and the outside wall is rust.
