Well I am a newbie who keeps swinging with not a lot to show for it. I have found some clad and have dug a lot of trash, my wife just shakes her head when I come home covered in dirt and sweaty without the diamond ring I said I would find when I bought my detector. Well I have to fly for business quite often so for this recent trip to New England I decided to take my AT Pro with me. So I got my old golf club hard case and packed all my detecting stuff. I had spotted what looked like an old abandoned baseball field while driving around on a past visit so I stopped there before I checked into my hotel. I had visions of silver everywhere because I was the only one who would think about hunting this location......well it became pretty clear real quick that I was not the owner of that original thought and the place had been hammered but I persevered and dug trash, and dug trash and dug trash so after a couple of hours I had a dime and a penny and enough aluminum to build a john boat. I wasn't discouraged though, tonight when I finished up all my meetings I changed into digging clothes and headed out to open area near a pond by the hotel to get some swing time in, well as you can expect not a lot to show for my efforts, again lots of trash and another dime, and then it happened, I started sweeping around the base of the biggest tree out there and got a good signal so I started digging, well out popped a penny just a few inches down, so into the pouch it went and I continued the hunt. So after a bit I decided to shut down and head back to the hotel, well I started looking at what I had found when I realized that that penny was a 1936 wheatie!!!! Now that doesn't sound like much to a lot of people but it was my FIRST!!! I felt like I just found King Tut's tomb!!! I didn't get to do a lot of research on this area I am in but I know I will have a much better plan for my next visit, maybe I will find my first silver!!!!!

Congrats on that first wheat! Persistence is the key and you have it! The trash you are digging is hiding some great finds!

.....and that trash you are digging makes you a bona fide environmentalist! Pack it out and dispose of it properly :)

Cleaning up the world, one pop top at a time.

Well written and appreciated. I've only been at it a few weeks, and I'm thrilled just to find clad. I will probably faint when I find an old, keeper coin.

I have still never found a wheatie, Sooo.........CONGRATS! Keep up the good work.

Seriously? My house was built in 1943 I found over 50 wheaties in my own yard. 3 clad dimes 4 nickels of no consequence and one Beefalo Not a single piece of silver though. Had to dig about 5,000,000 nails to get em!

LOL! Try not to faint as there might be a coin spill needing recovered. After making certain the hole is clear of ALL good targets you can join in the ritual many treasure hunters do called the "Happy Dance". Be unique and create your own way of showing appreciation and joy for the treasure that caused such a childish grin on your mug. Now get out there and find some keepers, then BUST A MOVE HOMIE!:headbang:

Seriously. My house was built in 1995. Most of the places I have hunted are newer. Far younger than a wheatie. The oldest coin have found to date is a '67 Kennedy Half. That is also my ONLY silver and only half. I have a permission that is old enough to produce wheaties, mercs, but so far, it has only produced trash. The best/most interesting thing I have dug there is a Model A valve stem cover.

My last house was built in 2004 The only thing I dug were nails and pieces of rebar. The house was in a cut grade community so it really was a waste of time. you are in a state that has excellent pickins. Change course and it will come to you. PS I will never admit to moving to an older house so I can swing the yard. :)

Still waiting for my first wheatie. In the meantime, I'll live vicariously through yours! :notworthy:

My farm dates back to 1832. I haven't found the first coin! Everyone keeps telling me to be patient and that I have to clear out all of the trash first. There's so much trash, Im not sure I've got enough years left! Lol!

Thanks for sharing the story! :occasion14:

Keep at it, in time your finds pouch will fill-up with great coins, jewelry and relics! :icon_thumleft:
