Well I am a newbie who keeps swinging with not a lot to show for it. I have found some clad and have dug a lot of trash, my wife just shakes her head when I come home covered in dirt and sweaty without the diamond ring I said I would find when I bought my detector. Well I have to fly for business quite often so for this recent trip to New England I decided to take my AT Pro with me. So I got my old golf club hard case and packed all my detecting stuff. I had spotted what looked like an old abandoned baseball field while driving around on a past visit so I stopped there before I checked into my hotel. I had visions of silver everywhere because I was the only one who would think about hunting this location......well it became pretty clear real quick that I was not the owner of that original thought and the place had been hammered but I persevered and dug trash, and dug trash and dug trash so after a couple of hours I had a dime and a penny and enough aluminum to build a john boat. I wasn't discouraged though, tonight when I finished up all my meetings I changed into digging clothes and headed out to open area near a pond by the hotel to get some swing time in, well as you can expect not a lot to show for my efforts, again lots of trash and another dime, and then it happened, I started sweeping around the base of the biggest tree out there and got a good signal so I started digging, well out popped a penny just a few inches down, so into the pouch it went and I continued the hunt. So after a bit I decided to shut down and head back to the hotel, well I started looking at what I had found when I realized that that penny was a 1936 wheatie!!!! Now that doesn't sound like much to a lot of people but it was my FIRST!!! I felt like I just found King Tut's tomb!!! I didn't get to do a lot of research on this area I am in but I know I will have a much better plan for my next visit, maybe I will find my first silver!!!!!

Great post! Everyone here knows exactly how that feels. That's what we call being bitten by the bug.
It's just the beginning and you have many great finds in your future. Welcome aboard. [emoji106]

Congratulations on your first wheatie and "keeper" coin. Back when I first started hunting I actually kept a journal of my recoveries. It took me around 100 hunts before I found my first wheat penny. I was STOKED!:occasion18: A lot of hunts and experience has gone into my therapy so now things are much better when searching for the good older targets. You will learn as we ALL do and the better finds will come in time. Just maintain that never say die attitude and you will be rewarded with some really amazing stuff.:icon_thumright:

It took me a while as well to find my first wheat and I probably almost died when I dug my first silver(a merc). congrats

Congrats man! Yeah as stated above: everyone here knows that same feeling you've just described! Such a good feeling...and now you are going to start finding more and more and more! My first wheatie felt good, but my first silver felt even better! Wait till that happens my friend [emoji57] this hobby keeps on giving. You just have to head out and swing that coil! I've found tons of gold and silver rings, and lots of nice silver coins and relics now. Yeah most days are mainly filled with trash and clad, but as long as you understand that's gonna happen, then you are good! So newbies think they are going to find a long lost pirate treasure chest full of gold coins the minute they start detecting....nope! Don't work like that. Gotta put that time in and the treasure will come! Congrats on a nice save and we wish you many more "keepers" to come!!!

**SOME newbies think....not "so" newbies.

Congrats on your first wheatie! Stick with it and I'm positive you'll find silver and other good stuff.

A tip: Indian Head pennies ring up lower than wheaties. If I remember correctly, when I used an ATPro they rang up in the low to mid 70's.

BLK HOLE, ain't it great when you find something older than yourself? Congratulations!

Soon to be twice bitten! Keep swinging and that diamond will come. What are you going to find next? No-one knows but please be sure to tell us :)

Thanks for sharing your excitement and kudos to you bringing your detector along and keeping an eye open for possibilities. Keep the mojo going!

Congratulations! You will have a memory of your first " good find" the rest of your life! Great story!

when you find the 1st real keeper of anything old, it is just pretty cool to have finally found something. so now you can check it off the bucket list but there are a million other things to find that are awesome too. congrats on the first and may there be many more firsts for you

"When I finished up all my meetings I changed into digging clothes and headed out"

That's what it's all about right there-leaving the world behind and heading out to unwind, forgetting about the world.

Congrats on the first, when starting out it's so great as there are so many.

I will say this that after 45+ yrs of swinging the coil and digging in the dirt nothing replaces the time alone listening to the beeps, and still I can get a first.

Just the beginning. It sounds like you have exactly the right attitude and more than enough patience to do very well at this hobby (especially in Virginia!)

Good luck in all your adventures, hope to see your first silver up here very soon

This is where it starts. I see many more for you in the future.

Hey the congrats on your wheatie. I'm a 3 year addicted nut and I know how it feels especially when you find it where you least expected those are even better. The addiction gets worse so hold on to your seat. My wife tell me when we drive now I subconsciously look left and right constantly looking for old land, houses and the street name so when we get home research begins. I put a lot of time into swinging and I have a job (and a understanding wife :) that allows me to detect at least 5 times a week and I do it! Failing plenty of times, but rewarded the more I do it. I have become quite lucky in my 3 years excluding a 1829 Spanish Mexican 8 Reales in a sidewalk strip in front of a boutique shop (after reading up on the history of my town) and lucking up on a 1900-O Barber Half Dollar last week at a modern public park in the next state over.....that I never even been to because it's raining in my state...I'm sick! Your on a lifelong journey so enjoy the ride. TNET members have so much knowledge and have thought me a lot. You're in a good place. Good luck.
