Charlie and I hit the river at low tide and walked it in a pretty heavy rain this morning. On our first pass we found nothing. On the way back things took a positive turn. First.... I saw this broken trade or CW pipe just barley protruding from a large clump of clay about a foot into the river. It was a miracle that I saw it at all. When I picked up the clump, it fell apart and all I had was the piece of pipe. I did recover the clump and checked it for the stem with negative results. You can clearly see the letters, "T.D." on the face of the pipe. Next..... and only about ten feet from the pipe, I see a piece of white quartz showing through the water about a foot out. I had actually seen it on my first pass but thought it was just a rock and passed it up. Now, from a new angle, I could see that it had been worked and when I picked it up.... it had knife written all over it. Very cool piece of white quartz and the edge is still pretty darn sharp. Speaking of knives...... if anyone has a clue as how to sage this, please give me your thoughts.

The rest are flakes, a possible fishing point and two tools that I believe are scrapers. I don't have room to post the possible scrapers here, so I may post them later. Thanks for looking and as always, I hope that you are all doing well and building your collections. Stay safe.

Here is another look at the possible scraper.

In the group picture, the bottom left piece is a Backed Knife (square edge opposite the cutting edge). The white quartz one may be a point, or as much a point as a knife. :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Uniface. I am not knowllagable in the subject of knives but want to learn :D If the bottom one in the group pic is a knife... its a big one. Is that common? I guess, I always immagine knives attached to a wood or bone handle and if this is a knofe, it may have been a handheld one without any handel... does that make sense? it's edge is still sharp and would be perfect for skinning game or something similar. The white one certanally has the base and shape of a lance point and you may be right on with your assesment. If it turns out to be a point.... that's just as cool... maybe cooler... than a knife ;D Its a beauty to hold no matter what it is. Thanks again for the comments.

Man with all that later stuff you find (pipes etc.) you are CRAZY not to metal detect. I bet you anything you would come up with some killer stuff. There are ancient coins in that sand for sure.

Yea man.... I wish I could but..... not possible. Stand by for P.M.

After some research, I discovered that the makers of the pipe were "McDougal of Glasgow", a Scottish company that made these before, during and after the Civil War. Someday, I may just find a complete pipe! I have a ton of pieces..... most of English origin.

Yea brother..... me 2 :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: Thanks.

Great hunt and a bunch of good looking artifacts. The quartz one is nice. Looks like a giant scraper or maybe a pre form on your big piece. The grey scrapers or knifes you have marked are killer. The pipe is, well something else. You should post in in todays finds as well. They would go nuts on an eye ball find like that.
Great hunt looks like you guys were in the water some

Hey TM.... good to hear from you. yes.... it was a good day and Charlie and I were getting wet from both ends haha. He was swimming, I was walking in the water and it was raining. I have never even been to Today's Finds but will go check it out now. Thanks again for the cool thoughts and suggestion. have a great weekend.

Wow, Ive never seen a pipe with lettering on it, they've always been plain, cool find.

Yea brother... me to. All of the fragments, stems, and bowells that I have are plain and can be traced back to England. This is my fist one of Scottish origin and the letters are a first as well. Thanks for looking :icon_thumleft:
