Most of my permissions here in Lancashire are on pasture but I'm fortunate to have a permission close to an old Roman fort that I've been hunting onnthe past few months. I've had lots of finds there including an 1821 gold sovereign coin but apart from a few grots nothing Roman yet.
With the Maize being cut down in October a lot more land is now available but the problem is it needs ploughing as the stubble is yet to rot and makes swinging a coil very difficult as those stumps are rigid stick up at about 10 inches from the ground.
I stuck with it though for a few hours and for all my cursing and irritation I was rewarded with three silver hammered coins albeit not in the best of condition. The small half cut would have been really nice had it not been cut which is a bit of a shame but hey ho, that's how the history goes.
I believe though I'm far from an expert and haven't really studied them closely that the small half is James I
The largest one is Charles I and the other is Elizabeth I.
Managed to score a small medieval heraldic pendant too but again not in good nick with no sign of any legend.
Two nice medieval spindle whorls and a handful of musket balls of various sizes and well not a bad session.
Can't wait till it's ploughed out and I can swing that coil properly.
I will find me something Roman there!
