I hunted some soybean fields around Sunset, Louisiana close to the area where the Battle of Buzzards Prairie occurred. I didn't dig much just two dropped Sharps Carbines, a chewed on round ball, an artillery frag and the two firsts for me. The middle dropped round I believe, per my McKee and Mason, is identified as a Hazard Army revolver round and the brass item is an epaulette locking key. As I've been told, they were used to lock the epaulette to the catch which was sewn into the shoulder of the uniform blouse. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1510625667.914088.jpg

Ill have to check that one out.

Great Hunt 'D'.
The Hazard is Very nice & in Great Shape , Sharpe's are always a welcome find, is it me or does the one on the right 'Look' a tad larger than the one on the left?

The 'Key' is very nice as well with lovely patina.

At a new site too? Hope you can score more relics there in the future , a few more Hazard bullets & even a pile of Buttons.

Thought you'd like to SEE proof that your find is indeed a broken-off "epaulette locking key"... also called a turn-catch, or a "keeper." Here are photos showing the intact turn-catch on an epaulette... which, for anybody here who doesn't already know, is also called "shoulder scales."

Thanks DD, Davers and Scruggs! Special thanks to CB Guy for the photos of the epaulettes with the turn-catches in place! It's especially interesting to see the various angles as it reveals a better perspective on exactly how they were utilized. YOU continue to educate us all!!

You found the key so the shoulder scale maybe nearby. Good luck to you. Great finds.

Thanks A11 - I sure hope so! Hunt for today canceled - Three inches of SNOW?!!

Three inches of snow in New Orleans???

Almost CBG, but I'm about 26 miles north of New Orleans on the Northshore of Lake Pontchatrain. What's even stranger is there are still patches of snow on the ground and on roofs unmelted 3 days after the snowfall.

I’m in Covington a stone’s throw from Abita Springs and I’m telling you I’ve never seen snow like that, big snowflakes, in my 48 years.

My Sunday hunt was canceled as well 22 o With Snow on the ground.

We got a little over 9 inches at my house , the ATL Airport got 2.5 I think.

The weather Man said on Wed afternoon "we may get a dusting on Friday". lol

Got some Tree damage to the house tho , It did look like a Postcard, with heavy wet Snow.

Hey Truth, I'm in Covington too, but Covington, Georgia.
